Upgrade advice!

Okay, here's the deal. I have a baby on the way, which translates to a money pit and all extra money going you know where. The wife has given me the okay to do one final upgrade before the new one arrives and made it clear that it needs to last for awhile as I probably won't get a chance to do another upgrade for at least another year or two.

So here's my budget, tell me your opinions on what I should get! Below is a list of things I have already done or have. I can probably spend anywhere in the range of $400-$650 so I'm still kinda limited.


2009 Unlimited X, 32" BF Goodrich Mud Terrains, Line-X interior, Neoprene covers, Nerf bars, and an open mind

Front bumper and winch... that might put you over the top. I would need to alot more about the type of wheeling you do and where you drive your rig. but in my oppinion a winch is never a bad thing to have.

It's mostly my DD but I do the occasional trails (maybe once every 5 weeks or so) but nothing too hardcore, mostly mountain trails w/ rocks, and some mudding when I get a chance. I have seen some good prices on CL for some winches so it may be doable.

^ I disagree. Winches are not necessary at ALL for anything but a solo wheeler or comp rig. They're helpful, but far from a good first budget accessory.
Armor!
Front & rear diff covers from River Raider- ~$300 shipped
RR engine/trans skids- ~$300 shipped.
Total: ~$600 for a rig you can beat on a whole lot more with some peace of mind. Figure $20 in beer and $10 in paint/prep (rattle can it), and you're nicely built for any green trails you want to hit, and MAYBE a few blues Mark W.

Good ideas. I do alot of solo hunting and outdoors activities. The places where I hunt can get pretty swampy, so i need to be self sufficient. hence the winch. Just my opinion, so thats what i gave.

Thanks for the advice...sounds like Mark has the right idea. Better to protect it with some armor. Think I'm going to go with the Ridder's (both axles covered for $229) and I found the Skid Row engine/trans skid plates for $290. Looks like they will both fit the budget!

I agree with you on the Riddler, save it where you can.
Armor is always a good first choice.

Although, I have to agree about the winch.
If you're going out alone alot, and you get stuck, it can save you a lot of heartache.

either a winch or a lunch box locker - I got stuck in a 90 turn where no other jeep could have made it back to get me out - so my winch was a must, but a locker is going in so that may not have happened in the first place. (the Aussie is going in in a week or so.)

my vote either a locker $249 for a aussie or a winch $300 of an XRC8, which I have and abuse and it works good!.

Not trying to sound ignorant here, but what exactly is a locker? I've seen them on quadratec and all, but not sure how they work or what purpose they serve. Guess I'm not really a hard-core off-roader so I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to all these parts.

Since you're a light off-roader, I'd suggest some good sliders and xmission/gastank skid plates

You have NO-NEED for any lockers, or winch, you might look into a light cage for the hardtop, you can find some good deals on ebay Craigslist

I just got back from Drummond Island and found that I definitely need more armor. Any kind of wheelinf and if you are not lifting your rig anytime soon, then armor is definitely needed. I have a transmission skid but now, I know I also need tranfercase skid, gas tank skid and exhaust muffler skid. Also get an evap canister relocation kit. Anywhere on trail, you might just loose your evap canister.

Armor is good, though I would not waste money on diff guards for the wheeling you do. I would think rocker protection is best as if you damage that area the cost will add up vs a cheap to replace front diff cover. Do you have a CB setup? oil/engine skid is also good idea.

Relocating the evap, isn't a bad idea, but

GettIng rid of that HUGE muffler was the third thing I did when I brought my '08 Rubi home, get a Flowmaster/Magnaflo/gibson/Borla--anything but that stocker and don't waste money on a muffler skid

I put my Flowmaster CAT-BACK right in front of the evap can and ran both pipes back from there--way up inside the frame and pretty sheltered from damage

Good luck-it'll take a lot of hobby money to stay with the addition (jeep)

I couldn't argue with any of the ideas above.
But can I suggest an alternate track?
How about something that makes you want to go places in your Jeep? A fishing pole. Some camping gear. You've got a nice ride already.

And a nice gift for your wife before her hormonal imbalance kicks in and she smacks you upside the head for always talking about Jeeps.

Congrats on the addition to the family!

Thanks! I am pretty much set on all the camping gear I need right now as we do this quite often. The next big purchase I would like to make is one of those nice off-road camping trailers (but that's def not in the budget prob until the jeep is paid off).

PS- Think the wife is already in that stage, lol.

I already have nerf bars on the jeep...do rockers and sliders use the some bolt alignment as the nerf bars? If so, I'd rather keep the nerf bars.

I was looking into getting the Poison Spyder evap can skid plate b/c it's suppose to give you another 3/4" clearance underneath. I don't want to relocate it in fear it may void something on my warranty. I'm also probably going to get the Ridder diff covers and the Skid Row engine/tranny skid plate.

Let me know your thoughts on the above purchases...I'm thinking of ordering them either today or tomorrow.... Do you think that is enough armor for now for me to get by on? There's already a "little" protection on the gas tank so I'm not going to get that right away (plus they are pretty pricey). Thanks!

well... with the wheeling that you do. i would invest in some tube doors or something of that nature, or armor... doesnt sound like you do anything too hardcore

my list of priorities when it comes to wheeling and jeeps is
1) safety first (CB, grab handles, seat belts, first aid, extinguisher, etc.)
2) recovery equipment (don't go in unless you can get out!)
3) armor (keeps the rig going back for more!)
4) more go/more slow (gears and lockers etc)
5) bigger everything (lift, tires, splines, etc... usually accompanied with #4)

Yeah, I like these ideas...the tranny and engine skid was all one piece which is why I liked it. It covered the oil pan too which I thought was important. Aren't the differentials the lowest point on the jeep? Why do you think this is a waste of money? ...just curious. Guess I have a lot of decisions to make. You guys are making this tough for me, ha!

The diff covers, especially front is only in danger when doing extreme rock crawling, I don't mean it can't suffer damage under normal conditions, but with PROPER driving, you'll never "JAM" the front diff. into a rock and you should always drive with caution, when NEAR/over trail rocks

I think your most advisable first armo,r will be the eng/trans plate--evap skid and sliders and that will protect the jeep for your first off-road excursions

Carrying your wife and Bambino, I'm sure you will use caution while driving ALWAYS and off-road will take an awareness, of what your driving over, will hit underneath and CORRECT your access line

Just a quick note, I learned years ago to (no matter what the vehicle is) drive off-road- knowing where the diff's/ front/back /trans gas tank/front steering mech, that way you will always keep your tires on the high points (rocks/stumps/zombies-etc

I'm afraid too many new drivers just buy all the skid plates they can and then feel like they can go anywhere--can't doit--learn to drive YOUR JEEP first !!

When I went offroading, I always tried to keep the tires on the rocks and everything else as far away as I could. I came with my evap can still in place which was something everyone in the group thought as miraculous. They all were not sure just how I managed not to break the thing off..

Have to agree with item #1 here. After backing over a fairly small stump in the yard that I did not even see I am in the market for a new evap canister.

Mmmm come to think of it, I was using the winch to skid out a log, so if I never bought the winch...

I have a "mobile" winch, that I use on the front and back of the jeep/trailer and I have used it for some logs, behind and jockeyed the ass end of the trailer

When it comes to bigger logs on the trail, I either use my Chain saw and/or "roll" big logs, using the jeep and tow cains/straps

By using a "mobile" winch, I've goten along for a LONG time without a winch, in front of the radiator

^JIMBO, I've notice a while ago that your bumper has the hitch built in, I figured you used it for winch. I like that set up.

Thanx H2, thats the Olympic "rock" bumper, just a couple pounds heavier than the stocker

I got an Oly for the rear, and I already have the "tow Pkg" so it was justa plain light duty bumper
