Upgrading my tires to the vaugly named "combo."

I’ve been driving around in my first Jeep for almost three months, and I love it. I decided to go with the jk mostly for the snowy weather conditions, and I was really impressed with how the stock ’13 tires handled in our last snowstorm. This being my first 4x4 probably has a lot to do with that.

I’m giving serious thought about upgrading my tires to 33/12.5/15/ DuraTracs on MB72's. I have a couple questions.

  • Are the DuraTracs noticeably better than the stock Sahara tires?
  • How much is the new combo going to hurt my mileage? This is my DD, and I’m getting about 18.5 mpg on the highway.

I drive a ’13 JKU Sahara, with 3.73 gears. Thanks for the info.

I have the same combo, almost. 305/70R16 Duratrac. The larger tire will float a bit on light, packed snow making driving a little squirrelly. The stock tires do well in those conditions. The duratracs are great in deep snow, mud, rain & dry pavement. it's up to you if you want to drive a bit slower sometimes with the new combo. Your gas milage will hurt a bit also, It'll probablu drop to around 15 on the highway. I did change my oil to full synthetic and gained another MPG though...Good luck!

The DuraTracs kill the stock tires. Not even a contest. In fact, the DuraTracs are to stock tires what filet mignon is to dirt. How's that for a comparison?

As for mileage, 18.5 seems kinda low to begin with. Running 33" tires will affect it, obviously, but to what degree really depends on how you drive, the type of driving you do, if you've got other mods that add weight, etc.

I wouldn't even try to predict it.

I run 35" DuraTracs and have numerous heavy mods, and avg about 16mpg.

BTW...your current low mileage may be attributable to winter gas. Should pick up when they get that junk outta the pumps.

I saw about a 1mpg drop between stock and DTs. Hardly noticeable at all for the awesomeness that you get out of the COMBO

Oh, I drive like an old lady now. I rarely go above 65, and use cruise control whenever possible. It gives me more time with the Jeep. My accelerations and decelerations are a lot better too. The jk has made me a *much* better driver.

I get 18-19mpgs right now with winter gas and sometimes 20 on highway with the 33x12.50. Thats going 65-70 mph and even 75 SOMETIMES if I'm in a rush. One thing I did notice I'd that using cruise control will lower my mpg's in hilly areas. Haven't really used it in a good flat stretch of road.

I have 33x12.50x15 DuraTracs on mb tko's the DuraTracs are far superior in everyway to the stock tires. They bite into mud an snow an tear right through the no problem. I went from around 19.3 mpg to 18.3 or so sometimes a little less from winter gas so it won't hurt your wallet much at all. I say get them an enjoy them.

WX is selling his but last I saw it was sale pending. Check the for sale section or send him a PM

Edit: I just checked and he has in fact sold them. You could still post up in the Wanted section that you are looking for those wheels.

So if the MB72s are being discontinued, any bets on what the next "combo" will be? I'm kinda diggin' the Level 8 Trackers ...

i love the level 8 trackers. problem with them is they're hard to come by. i wanted them when i ordered my wheels... but DTD didn't have any in stock and they gave me the level 8 ZXs for the same price... i jumped on that deal!

The combo is way better in the snow than the stock tires. Yes they do float a little bit more but man they grip so much better.

I was mostly into the mb72s for their light weight. Do the Lvl 8 Trackers weigh about the same?

yes. i forget the exact weight... but my 315/75 r16 GY Duratracs and Level 8 ZXs where like 76 or 78 pounds if i recall correctly. running it on this for about a year:

Smittybilt 2743 - Smittybilt Oversized Tire Carrier in Black for 07-13 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

i plan to do the TF Hinge Carrier.. maybe just the hinges without the carrier. i don't know yet. but wheeling and all, it's held up great, no rattling or anything.

I prefer function over weight, of course you aren't running 37's but my Toyo tires are 92lb each.
