Used JK prices?

I have been thinking about buying a late model 2 door JK, initially I was thinking used but after looking for a few weeks there does not seem to be much savings in getting a couple year old one with 20k to 30k miles. The savings is less than $5k, usually a lot less. Maybe it is the northeast but at this point I think I will just buy new, pretty impressive how well they hold thier value.

Yep... That is why most buy new.

In my case, I wanted a Rubicon.

Paid 22k for an 07 w/ 35k.... Perfect shape.
New 2 door Rubicons are near 30k

I am happy

New guy chiming in. I just picked up a 2012 Sahara 6spd with 2k on it for 24.4 , and I'm VERY happy with it. There are bargains to be had, best of luck.

Talk about low mileage.

Agreed here also. Was looking for slightly used, but pricing and the 3.6L was worth the few extra. I ended up placing order, now the wait begins.

I know what you mean. We looked at 2008-2009 JKU's for about three months and they were still in the low to mid $20's. I looked at some 2012 models but I also knew how many mods I wanted to do and my budget wouldn't allow a 2012 plus all of the mods.

We stumbled across a 2011 with only 3208 miles on it and I snagged it. I didn't steal it by any means but I feel I gave a fair price for it. So far I am happy with it. To me the few extra ponies of the 2012 wasn't worth the $10k plus price difference. I plan on supercharging my 2011 in the future anyways.

Mike.

Yeh, that is what I was finding. They are holding their value extremely well. Great when selling, sucks when buying.

I was in the same boat and I found that the pricing was so high on Rubicons that for just 5k more, I could go from a 2009 with 40k miles to a brand new Rubicon with more options, while also having the new motor and redesigned interior. It is almost a no brainer at that point.

Think in 2 or 3 years, when 2012's and 13's start coming up for sale used, the prices of the pre 2012's will drop significantly. If one has a choice over the 3.6 or 3.8L I think most will want the 3.6, unless the 3.8L is priced for a lot less.

Fail...

That's like saying the Tj will drop value when the JK arrives.... Did it? Nope

An "enthusiast" may select one over the other but most newbs won't have a clue

If power out of the box is what you seek, then ya you might score a3.6. As you stated though, a newb could do this or that. If you want ease of service in backyard, because your a gearhead, the 3.8 is certainly easier to build. Ive always said, its what you build, Not what you buy. Superchargers and other engine parts such as cams, lifters etc.. can make a 3.8 a fire breather. When there available, they will do the same to the pentastar, however you dont have to be a scientist to work on a 4.0 or 3.8, same cannot be said for 3.6. A comparative example to show my point was with Fords earlier 302 and then the 4.6 which boasted more out of box power. Most enthusiest stuck with building 5.0 for its simplicity and parts availability. Now wheres the 4.6? Replaced with the 5.0 that it replaced years earlier. Not saying anything bad about any jeep power plant, but keep in mind, when your done buying your 3.6, the three year old 3.8 thats paid for and owned by the old timer down the street just might teach you a thing or two on the trails....I am very curious to see how long jeep stays with the 3.6 as the 3.8 had a short lifespan. If you feel this is a pentastar hater answer, take a midol, its not. Nor is it a 3.8 loving answer.

I'll get back to you in two years and we'll see who failed. I don't buy the TJ JK comparison, totally different looks. A different engine is a major upgrade/change on a platform that is essentially unchanged other than the new interior in '11.

Simple supply and demand. The '12+ will be in more demand, dropping the price of the pre '12's

Sorry, I know nothing about the sales stats on TJ's

But if I had the choice obviously I'd buy the 4.0L. Had it in a 91 Cherokee, great engine.

There are deals to be had. I bought mine a year old with 12k for a little less than kbb otd from a dealer. They were wanting the same $ for a '05 TJ with 40k on it. Probably because the 29" tires? Idk

Canadian prices

Hey. New member here too.

Just bought a 2008 JK U Rubicon w/ 70K Km on it (43.5 K miles).
Paid 22K + taxes (25.3K$... ouch taxes).
(1 CDN$ = 1US$ right now. )

This was significantly cheaper than the no-options new rubi that the dealer priced out at 38K. I noticed the 2010's were going at about 26.5K pre-negotiation. Still quite a bit cheaper than new.

Also, some 2008's and 2007 rubis where listed even cheaper (19.5K-21.5K pre-negotiation), but the one I found was in perfect condition.

I read everywhere that these guys hold their value, but frankly I didn't find the used prices to be much higher than I'd expect from another car. I can think of one main reason: Canadian prices for new cars are much higher than US ones. The sticker price is higher and the taxes, shipping fees and other miscellaneous cash-grabs are higher too. But the used prices were similar to what I saw in US ads. That is probably because US dealerships near the border are forbidden from selling to Canadians (they are) but anyone can buy a used car anywhere, which forces a price balanced on the used vehicles.

Anyways, that's been my experience.

(BTW, super happy with the tank I bought. Until the trails open in the spring, I'm happy with having considerably more parking options in snow bank-ridden Montreal.)

Thanks for the feedback, I should have mentioned, I am interested in a base Wrangler, only options being A/C and 3.73s, looks like I can get a '12 for about $22.5. I plan on lifting it and putting on wheels and tires on it, I think the cost over late model used is worth it for me, more HP, warrantee and it will be brand new.

I was able to find an 07 2 door X with 15k miles on it and a 4.10 rear end from the factory for $17k in norther Virginia. I love it but now I want to get a 4dr when money allows so my daughter and wife can fit in there comfortably (and so she has something to drive).

FWIW I picked my '10 JKU Sahara about a month ago for $24k. 28k miles, both tops, remote start, auto, side airbags. Got it at a lexus dealer. They had it blue booked at $26500, myself and the bank had it blue booked at $31500. I guess they dropped the ball. Their loss, my gain.

That blue book value seems high...I paid $32K for my 09 brand new...in Canada, where they are usually more.

The price you paid sounds about right.

A guy in my town picks up old YJs and TJs probably from the auto auction, cleans them up a bit and sticks them out in front of the place he works for $4,000 to $6,000 bucks. And I ain't talkin' nice jeeps, no tops, no doors, crappy seats, rusty rims with passenger car tires and the damn things are still snatched up in 2 or 3 days.
When Dodge changed the body style of their Ram trucks back in 2001. I took a huge loss when I traded in my 1999 for a new Ram because everybody wanted the new body style and engine upgrades. I have to agree with kjeeper10 that the TJ wasn't subject to major depreciation in value when the JK came on to the market. Last year my neighbor bought an non rubicon 05 TJ for $14,500. I would venture a guess that the sticker for that vehicle back in 2005 was probably $15,000-$17,000. I currently wish my house had that rate of depreciation.

All this talk had me check Kelley Blue Book today. According to that, mine has trade in value 1k less than I paid otd almost 2 years and 24k miles ago. But I already dropped over 5k in mods so not worth it.

The ford thing is kind of a bad example lol, not in the fact that the 4.6 was harder to work on ( It definately was a little harder, I'm a mustang enthusiast to) but it just didnt have as much bang for the buck as the old 5.0. The new 5.0 is completely different than the old one. It's there most complicated engine to date boasting variable valve timing and all that jazz.
Not disagreeing with you though, I definately think people who want to build are going to go with the engine that is easier to build. and that would be the 3.8. I bought mine to just drive and enjoy, I'm done with engine modding on my DD so I got a 3.6.
