Hi all...Jeep newb' looking for some veteran opinions.
I have the opportunity to purchase a 2008 JKU X with 120000 miles for 12k.
It has been treated well, has both tops and rear limited slip, and I know the owner personally (not the scammer type at all). It's basically stock with no accidents. Mild wheeling, and a ton of freeway miles.
12k seems like a pretty good deal to me, but what do I know... Online prices seem to be all over the place.
If I do buy it, what can I expect to be dealing with mechanically at 120000 miles?
Thats a great deal- I followed the market for a month before buying recently, and an '08 JKU with a salvage title due to a minor flood(no damage)sold for about that on Ebay. I bought my '08 with 110k miles and a bad engine for $8750 and spent $3200 on an engine swap, which would be your unlikely worst case scenario. Mine also had an axle seal leak and bad ball joints which were easy and cheap fixes. I am detailing my build and any unwelcome surprises on a thread here as well. I would not hesitate were I you- what color is it?
I hear the sound of a wallet being pulled out Of course it will be the first of many times. Kepp going till it hurts then go one Mod more
2007 Black JKU now known as the Black Mistress. 2.5 TF Coil Lift w/Bilstein 5100 Series Shocks, 33x12.5x15 Duratracs on MB Chaos 5 Wheels, XRC MOD front Bumper, Smitybilt X2O Comp 8000 Winch, LOD Gen 4 Rear Bumper, s-Pod Swith system, Amp Research Retractable Side Steps, Polly performance Suspension Bolt upgrade Superchip Programer and more
Encouraging to hear! By the time 2017 comes around I'll have 100,000 miles on my 2012 JK due to using it for customer and job-site visits -- lots of highway miles/smiles. I factored resale value into my economic analysis of cost-mpg-insurance and this strong resale market makes me look smart for the time being anyway.

My personal opinion as a technician, I'm more affraid of a low mileage car then a well maintained high mileage car. When they are driven and maintained the seals don't dry out and everything stays happy and there is a difference in short commuter hop miles and easy highway miles. I have had motors puking oil at 50k and others that have frequent oil changes and driven with 120k and bone dry. I had a tennis instructor that had an 08 328 and when I last saw it probably two years ago it had 180k on it and a very short list of repairs.

A dealer around here has a 2007 Sahara Unlimited with dual tops for $13,900 Canadian. That is the cheapest I have seen one in these parts. It has 175,000km (almost 109,000 miles) but looks pretty clean.

Have it checked by an experienced Jeep mechanic. There are some things that could be worn out with that milage and cost a lot to replace. OTO, it could be, and probably is a great deal! If you have it checked, so you know what you are getting, you can make an intelligent decision. Good luck!
