Based on your join date, I'm going to assume you have a 2013. On newer JK's (+2011) there is some type of clip that needs to be pushed back with a screwdriver before the ring can be removed....but I've never done it myself. Pre 2011 models twisted off.

Look inside the vent ring, you'll see a little rectangular hole. Push a small screwdriver into that hole and twist the ring, the whole thing should slide out. At least, that's how I remember it working.

On the 2014-
turn counter-clockwise about an 1/8 of a turn then simply pull it straight out.
It takes a strong hand to turn them, and they are difficult to grip(esp the one left of the steering wheel) but grab-hold, turn and they will come out.

I found during the day, when the sun would shine thru the windows on the grey trim, there was a faint-grey reflection or ghost(of the trim) on the window, which was right in the middle of my "view" thru the side mirrors.

This was very annoying....
So I-
I removed the trim, lightly sanded them with 400 grit sandpaper and then painted them with "flat black Rust-oleum- plastic paint". I also did the same for the 4 grey trim pieces on the door handles, the grey "Jeep since 1941" trim handle, and taped off and painted(with the same paint) over the sun visors "warning/safety label". left them to dry for 24hrs, then reinstalled everything, looks great!

If your removing them without releasing the retaining tab first, then that's why it seemed to take a strong hand to turn them. Watch the video I linked above, and you'll see there's a small slot to stick a screwdriver in and release the tab. If you do that, they twist and pop right out no trouble. In fact, once I released it, my 4 year old took out out last time when helping me replace my failed Lockpick.

No trick, should be exactly the same as 2013.
