Was your your 2012 W5A580 Trans made in Indiana or Germany?

Mine was made at the Mercedes plant in Hedeldingen Germany, not the Chrysler plant in Indiana.

I wonder why?

All I can say is that the 6spd manual on our 10 Rubi was assembled in Germany and it works flawless. No JOG, no unusual noises, etc. German engineering I guess. I'm wondering how many of the complaints associated with the 6spd's have to do with where they're assembled.

There have been several revisions of that tranny since Mercedes developed it in 1995, and I thought the Indiana plant might not yet be tooled up for the "wrangler" version.

I doubt it's cheaper to have the Germans build and ship than to have it built locally.

If you are going to have a German made part in your American vehicle though, the transmission is where that precision engineering and quality control would be best put to use...

I'd think they'd be nearly identical, if not identical, since the tranny has been in use since 1995. But then again if they put parts in upside down like the piston rings in the Mexican assembled 3.8L engine look out!

Both the German and the Indiana plant probably have the same parts and plans to assemble the A580 tranny, so the only thing that's different is the workers. If they can follow the plans and use the same parts the end product should be the same. Shouldn't it? LOL Unless they are both manufacturing their own parts too, then they can be vastly different.

When you flush the transmission, if it smells like bong water, it was made by the UAW.

I hear ya, the good news is "absolutely 0 oil loss KOW". I think you've got nothing to worry about! I was told the tranny in my Aerostar was junk, 202,000 miles later, no problems to report, still working fine, and it was used hard!
