Water Leak around Tailgate

I have a 2009 4 door JK.

Since I've had it I have got wet carpet in the outer corners of the floor, just inside the tailgate weather stripping, either side of the cover for the jack compartment, anytime it rains. In a prolonged rain, I get enough water in this area that it will fully flood the jack compartment.

I can't find any evidence of water coming down the sides, no other area near there is wet. I have recently decided the the most likely source is coming from water inside the tailgate, exiting the tailgate via what seems to be a 45 deg drain hole at lower inner corners of the tailgate. The drain hole appears to be outside the weather strip, but the weather strip also looks like it has a molded pocket in the corner that allows water coming out of these openings in the tailgate to get past the weather strip and onto the carpet inside.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do you know the source?

If my hypothesis is correct, then how is water getting inside my tailgate and how do stop it?

I also noticed the underside of the carpet inside the back passenger doors is wet after a rain. I'm not sure of the source there either.

Thanks,
Joe

There is a vent behind the spare tire mount. If the vent is stuck open, water could leak in

hard top? i know the rear glass leaks on the hard top if the seal is even slightly dirty. this drips down into the rear compartment and it looks like the water is on the outside of the glass, but it's on the inside.

Yes, It is a hard top. There is some evidence of water coming down the inside of the glass, but not is large amounts, and the lines are all across the glass, more concentrated under the wiper motor. However there is never any wet carpet anywhere but in the corners. I also find water inside the fold in the bottom weather strip.

There is a cutout in the center of the third brake light mount. And the tire carrier doesn't "seal" tight against the tailgate. I'm going to take the spare and the mount off and check that out as a possible water entry point.

My long term solution is to Rhino line the interior, and then just not worry about it. Until then its a corrosion hazard.

It so sounds like there's water in my passenger door. Ever hear of that?

This is how i fixed my rear window leak. And of course, I waited for Summer or at least a week of sun to dry things out. I took the Jack out and dried it and placed it somewhere else. Doesn't leak, even after getting hit with a blast from the hose

Thanks a bunch. It's gonna be a couple months till it dries out enough here to even think about trying anything like that so I will keep up on this thread and update when I am actually able to.
