Weird question...Will you go outside and close your tailgate for me?

..and then come back and tell me if it sort of shakes and/or makes a rattle sound when you close it? Also, if you push directly on the tailgate, just to the right of the handle and in between the tire..does the tailgate sort of "give" in a little bit?
A lady backed into my new Rubicon in a parking lot the weekend before last, and it looked like just some very minor scratches on my spare tire wheel. I took it to a body shop for an estimate today and they said they took the tire carrier, tailgate, etc, apart and nothing seems to be out of order. The scratches are so minor and I'm interested in a tire/wheel upgrade here soon anyway, so I opted for a ~$450 check rather than a new wheel.
When I got home tonight, I closed the tailgate after getting my gym bag out of the back and as I closed it it, I noticed a little extra sort of rattle sound and noticed everything (tailgate and tire) shakes. I can't figure out if I'm paying such attention to detail that now my anal retentive personality is taking over in this situation and I'm just now noticing something that has always been there and is normal.
Thank you!

What year JK do you have?

Did they check the tailgate hinges? IMHO, based on what you mentioned, the hinges would be #1 on my list of possibilities.

Might have popped the spot welds on the tailgate.

Please pardon my ignorance, but how can I tell if the spot welds are damaged? :/ Do I look for cracks or something?

Sorry, it's a 2014! They said they checked everything, so I would assume they would have checked the hinges too. Any advice on how I can tell if something is wrong with those?

Run your finger over the circular spot welds on the inside of the gate. These should be smooth (no paint cracking, etc.)

Check this:
Popping noise from tailgate

This is another noise source possibility:
Noise in tailgate area

Okay, all of the spot welds seem to be perfectly fine. I don't see any cracks at all. Do you have any movement at all when you shut your tailgate? By that I mean, does you spare tire wiggle at all, even just for half a second? I'm just trying to figure out if the movement I see has always been there and I'm just making a big deal out of nothing. I don't want to regret not having it taken care of while I have the chance at the body shop.

My 2014 JKUR tailgate makes a little noise when closing.. Hard to describe but its not perfectly quite. The spare does wiggle a little..a tiny bit.. When closing as well. The bump stops are rubber so I'd expect some wiggle. If you pm your cell I'll go take a video and send it to you

I get no rattle. Spare doesn't move at all even if I slam it.

Really appreciate the video, but it says it's private. Can you try changing the settings?

Yep yours looks really solid, with zero movement. I'm working on uploading mine now. Thank you so much for taking the time to do that!

I don't get anything noise that would make me wonder if looseness or rattle sound it closes tight with a solid sound tire moves ever so slightly but it's a 32

Luck to you

I'm going to take a look at a co-worker's in the morning, and hopefully ease my thoughts about it. I know it's not a huge deal, but while I have the body shop involved, I want to make sure it's done correctly...it's brand new and I want my shit right Sorry for diluting the forum every one. I'm new and still figuring it all out! Thanks for your comments.

It's all useful! Someone, somewhere, sometime...maybe 10 years from now will have some issue with his/her tailgate and search for how a brand new tailgate is supposed to close. Now there are exactly 2 videos of this in the world

As someone who usually closes his gate by pushing on the spare, it seems your spare moves a lot. I don't get that kind of movement on mine but I have 32" tires. I would maybe take the spare off and check the spare carrier and the connection to the gate.

I also have a 2014.

You may just be hearing the resonance of the tailgate. The bigger the tire the louder it becomes. It's always there but maybe you didn't hear it before because you weren't paying such close attention.
