Wondering what the consensus is for plastics cleaner / polish. Want something that works well and lasts more then a few days. I am in Florida and the sun here is brutal on the black stuff. Thanks for your input.
I'm in Phoenix and yes, the sun is also brutal here. I have tried many different products. Back to Black works the best for me on my fenders and bumpers. Apply two coats with a sponge and rub it in real good. Always apply it in the shade. I do this twice twice a year and mine stay nice and black.
I've used a lot of stuff over the years and recently found out that Simple Green works wonders on black plastic. It removes any grime and leaves a nice shine that last for a long time.
I had some very sun faded flares on the jeep when I purchased it. I tried the mothers back to black, and was not satisfied with the results. I think they were just too far gone to bring back. I went a different route instead. I painted with Plasti-dip. I am very happy with how they turned out. I have had it on for a few months now and it seems to be holding up very well. I assume it would provide excellent protection too against the fading effects of the sun. When it gets scuffed up or scratched, you can just peel it off and re-apply. I used 3 cans to do all 4 flares. At $7 a can I felt it was good money spent. I will post a before and after pic for comparison.
Grocery Store grade Peanut Oil.. About the best thing i found, and i found it here, that works.. Fluid Film provides similar results but i've only tested Fluid Film on small areas. Either one probably a good choice
Turtle Wax Trim Restorer. I've tried 303 and Mother's Back to Black before. The Turtle Wax Trim Restorer is far better and lasts about 6 months. The only down side is that you apply it in the sun which can be a bear in July!
I use my Meguires tire shine. But have used Turtle Wax Ice paste or spray wax. If I wasn't lazy the Ice Paste is the best and has outstanding UV protection.
I have been using Adams polishes products for years. He makes a vinyl, rubber, and tire cleaner that I like to use to clean the plastics and tires really well. Then I use his VRT to coat stuff. Lasts a while and looks great. I know a guy using his ceramic coating and is really happy with that on the black trim as well.
Bought a bottle of 303 last month when I picked up my Jeep. My biggest concern is just getting something with UV protectant. My GTI I kept looking good with tire dressing which worked well enough, just didn't last long.
....guys....I'm tellin ya...forget this high-priced automotive stuff....
Penetrol - a $9 bottle will last you years....wipe it on with a lint free cloth and you're done for at least a year or more (depending on where you live). Could not be easier....google it and you'll find lots of examples of car/plastic restoration.
I first discovered it in my boating days when restoring fiberglass on an old Boston Whaler....made it look like new.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'm going to give this a shot next.
I've tried a couple products that have been recommended by others over the years. They all worked but nobody seems to talk about the duration and difficulties in applying it. If it lasts for over a year like you said, then that sounds good to me.:thumb:
I used Turtle Wax Trim Restorer and it is by far the best thing I've ever used and lasts the longest of anything I've used. I live in So Florida and have tried pretty much everything at one time or another.
Haven't had much had much luck with 303. It's good for the interior but it takes tons of it to bring back the bumpers and doesn't seem to last very long at all. Going to try the Penetrol or peanut oil next.
