What can I do to my 3.8 L ?

Any suggestions on how to make my 3.8 L not such a dog? Just bought my wife a 2010 JKU Sahara (it has the 3.73's) and we live in an area where the roads are very hilly. Sure, her last vehicle had a V8 but the Jeep just feels so underpowered.

I thought about a chip/programmer or intake, etc.... but I/m not sure how well the 3.8 L engines respond to modifications.

Any suggestions and real world experience that you have with the item you suggest would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Supercharger. Neither the chip or intake will help enough to get it to stop feeling underpowered. That or just get used to the way it feels and know it won't be like your previous V8. Sorry to tell ya! Hope you are enjoying your new Jeep other than that though!

Sell it and buy a 2012 or newer. Totally different beast.

The programmer will help with the throttle response and the speedo limiter, it will help with drivability and such but still won't compare to a SC or V8.
It will allow you to program and run 91 octane properly and will reset shift patterns especially if you have bigger tires.
According to Dyno tests the Superchips Flashpaq 91 performance tune on 91 octane has higher peak torque then the 3.6.

Unfortunately bolt on mods won’t do $hit. Your choices are re-gear, drop in LS or Hemi, forced induction or trade it in for something else. Obviously the less expensive is re-gear but still cost involved. For 35’s, auto on the 3.8L I suggest 5.13’s. A manual with 35’s I would suggest 4.88.

Thanks for the s/c idea, like that is anywhere in the budget! I should of asked for reasonably priced options - programmer / chips, intake, etc... How do they help? I'm not looking to make this thing fly, just not need to downshift so often and have such little balls.

I have the superchips programmer and use it on my 2010 2 dr rubicon with 4.10 gears and 33" tires with those tires its like a 3.99 rear. If you have an automatic it will make a noticeable difference with the 93 octane tune. Of course then you have to run premium fuel. The six speed doesn't have as steep an overdrive as the automatic and you can control the shifting. What size/type are your tires?

As mentioned, all bolt-ons are gimmicky. I highly doubt you'd feel a difference. Think about how much money these companies have made by advertising gains with cold air intakes, aftermarket exhaust systems, etc. I've tried them all. It's only fun installing this stuff.

Intake really won't do anything. The jk doesn't have a very restrictive intake. The chips can do something but it won't be as noticeable as a regear or supercharger

The end result was that although the Viper Throttle body is bigger 72mm bore and did seem to help throttle response, the computer still controlled the air/fuel flow so no performance gains were made. A custom tune would need to be installed and larger injectors for gains to be realized.

The viper throttle body with a larger air intake works well on my auto 3.73. But,mine is a 2-door...... Re-gear or trade.

Ended up buying a used Superchips Flashpaq and I an very happy with the results for the price. Still not a V-8 by any stretch of the imagination but much better than stock.
