Question What *don't* you like about your Jeep?

Okay, before you wonder what kind of jackwagon would come on and post a question like that, let me explain before you flame me...

My other post (my first) was askin' for general opinions before I maybe/maybe not go buy a new '12 Sport. And I got some nice words of wisdom. But I would like to know about the "dark side" as well.

This would apply to any vehicle, I guess. I have a Mini Cooper that I LOVE. But if someone asked me to list the little annoying things that I tolerate because I enjoy owning/driving the Mini, I'd ask how much time ya got. We also have an italian Moto Guzzi motorcycle, which my wife loves, but it'd take me a whole six-pack to get done detailing the annoying things about it that you wouldn't deal with on a new Kawasaki.

I guess my point is that you can still love your Jeep despite it's flaws and quirks. I'd just like to know what those are. Y'all wouldn't be on here if you weren't Jeep enthusiasts... but what do you overlook/tolerate in order to enjoy your ride as a daily driver?

Thanks for indulging me, I appreciate your comments.

The only thing so far is that the steering wheel is freezing cold and never warms up until I get to work. And another issue to go with that is that the right driver side vent can't point towards my right hand when it's on the wheel. My left hand is nice and toasty under the heater, but my right hand is an ice cube... I suppose I just need to get some good leather gloves.

The feeble gearing options, though that's a complaint more from people who modify their Jeeps than from folks who buy them and keep them relatively stock.

Edit: Oh, and the headlights suck.

Love my Sport. Knew the MPG wasnt going to be great, so it really want a factor in my purchase. HOWEVER, Im all city driving and Im getting 13.6....all the time. Also, I have a not so great lower back, kinda miss the lumbar support. That being said, this Jeep is fun as hell to drive and I havent even been off road yet.

What I *DO* like about 'Rocinante' aka 'Nellie Belle' is the "transformer" quality that with various minor application of attention I can better morph it into exactly what I want.

What I "don't" like, is that it doesn't autmatically understand that and waits for ME to do the mod.

While washing/waxing IS of minor time/effort, somehow it seems like I'm doing far more of that than any other rig I've ever owned.

Since I tend to fill gas at somewhere around 1/2 tank, it seems like I'm doing that quite a bit. Hard to get out of the habit. I don't like going around with short gas range.

They should come with some kind of storage shed to keep the rear seat & other stuff out of the way....HAR!

The windshield get buggy real easy.

Something is wrong with my 08, it seems to have plenty of power.

It DOES annoy the stock headlights are so abysmal...but Daniel Stern's H4 set up has remedied that now.

On the other hand, I'm getting pretty good at removing/replacing the grill.

At 11 months/15,000 miles into this relationship, I'm still overwhelmed by the GOOD things rather than picking at the bad things.

Poor gas mileage, weak stock head light and windshield kills more bugs then anything I've ever driven before.
But what I really dislike is that I can't afford all the mods I want. I'm saving up but the longer it takes to save the longer and more expensive my mod list gets.

I have a 2010 sport.....there is very little which annoys me.....I miss the fold down windshield on my cj, the wrangler process is a joke and I don't bother folding it down. My front seats don't fold forward for access to the rear (supposedly remedied on the 2012). Wind noise is evident but to be expected, ride is somewhat choppy but to be expected given the wheelbase etc. Interior storage is minimal but worth the trade off to me, Leaking tops are commonplace but my soft top has not leaked yet. On road snow performance is not as good as many other vehicles I've had/have....I'm not talking deep snow but the common sloppy inch to four inches and cornering, braking etc. Our Honda Ridgeline and Subaru forester etc seem to perform better in such conditions....not nitpicking over tire choice differentials etc...just in general and this is not to say the jeep suffers in this area. Of course those vehicles dont hold a candle to the fun and off road ability the jeep provides (though i did have my ridgeline in the mud this week and it did much better than i thought it would). That said, we will be ordering another JK in the near future since I can't keep my wife out of ours!

not sure really. i don't have any problems, no wants, no worries love it still after almost 6000 miles. if i did it again, i might get air bags as it didn't come with any off the lot. i traded my 2007 for the 2012 and i'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Thumbs up

Thank you, these are precisely the type of 'real world' answers I was hoping for.

I am enthused about the Jeep, but as with any purchase that will take 25-30,000 duckets out of my coffers (um okay, I meant financed for 5 years), I appreciate knowing the 'good with the bad' about a vehicle purchase.

And I just found out this website has an iphone app, so now y'all are gonna get to ride around in my pocket!

i really hate to wash my 2012 jeep wrangler rubicon unlimited so I have been taking it to have it washed. I do not feel it under powered in any way... but as it goes, if you put the pedal to the metal your MPG's will decrease.
I do wish they could have made the huge plastic fender flares more attractive, I did not like the look when the 2007 came out and it took till I bought my 2012 to warm up to those huge plastic fender flares.
That's it.

i think the 2012 solved the problem i had with it being under powered. i now have the rubi with the 6 speed trans and 4:10 Rear end. made all the difference in the world. in fact, i probably waved off riding the motorcycle to work this summer/fall in favor of the jeep....what to ride....Jeep vs. Harley....Jeep , now that says a lot.

Oh, and what's up w/the cinderblock-size rear windshield wiper motor?

Not that you can see out the back very well, anyway.

I totally agree with this assessment. Between that, the rear seat head rests (which I removed) and the spare tire it's hard to see much out of the back. I'm glad I have no tint at all in the windows.

Also it's annoying to have the elec. window controls in the center of the dash instead of on the door.

Gas milage is crappy but I guess I expected that.

So far, I have a TON of praise for my 2012 JK Sport... (new motor, quality, etc...), but only 2 complaints. The stock headlights are weak and the windshield seems to kill ever bug in the area . So far a coating of Rain-X has helped the bug problem (I still kill 'em, but they don't stick). I'll try Phillips +80 bulbs next. Both of these probs were expected before I bought the new Jeep. Gas milage shouldn't be a complaint as the Wrangler has never been a gas miser... my new JK is getting 17 mpg city.. 2 mpg better than my TJ.

How about Jeep vs Triumph?

And there's a time and place for both...

I disagree, I would rather have a "mechanical" connection to my transfer case. In other words, I prefer a lever to engage 2 wd- 4 hi -4 lo rather than a switch.

If you know how to do this, it is not that difficult.
It might require some "expertise" but you will not rely on an indicator light to let you know you are in 4-WD

True. If I have to transport anything larger than wallet / cell phone...Jeep.

If I want to examine the effect of g-forces on human skin...motorcycle.

The windshield bug and rock magnet... but I like the panoramic view it offers. In truth, the more I own mine, the more I like it. Handling and tight turning radius kicks ass in the country and city.

Instead of things I don't like, I think it is better to think of what compromises you might make. I don't lock the doors because with a soft top, why bother. You learn to think about what you"ll pack, but in truch the jk holds plenty. There will be wind noise. If you want a tomb like cabin, don't get one.

Fuel economy for me has been about 20 mpg mixed. Avoid jackrabbit starts.

Fact is, it's a potent combination of old skool and modern tech that rocks. I love my Wrangler.

I have the '12 Unlimited Sahara. I can't see much out of the back window. I have learned to compensate by using the side mirrors, and hoping no one short walks behind while I am backing up. The rear wiper motor is mainly blocked by my 10 year old's head, so the fact that it makes for a smaller viewable area doesn't bug me that much. The headrests bugged me at first, they are very forward, but then I adjusted the seat.

Love it!

I have a 07 wrangler 2dr. I found out the hard way that the stock head lights weren't that great. I live in the city and was on my way back to Phoenix from Wyoming it wasnt until I was driving on a winding road in a canyon at night while it was raining that I realized the headlights were an issue. I have also had problems with the interrior (carpet and seats). Im not sure if I got the problem child of jeeps but as of lately I have had several other problems with it mechanically.. Randomly wont start (checked and replaced the batttery) but found if it dosent start put it in neutral and it will start almost every time. Also I can be driving down the road and out of the blue the radio shuts off, the screen goes blank and wont turn back on for a while. Recently while changing the oil I found pinkish stlagmite looking stuff (which looks kinda cool and grose) (I took pictures) under the jeep which I was told by the dealership the other day was due to my water pump leaking. But the water pump thing is a maintance thing so Im not too bummed by that.
But dont get me wrong I love my Jeep its just that sometimes I think it doesn't love me back.
