I bought his book for Moab. Pretty good info in there. Would buy it again.
Used Back Country Navigator (the free version to try it out). Worked well, lots of great maps to download.
Ran it on a Samsung Note 4, which has a slightly bigger screen than the Galaxy s5. Really liked how it could have multiple apps going without issue.
Normally I'm a map and compass type, as it is easier to plan out routes, or re-routes. The GPS was fun to run as a backup.
X2. I have an Android based head unit in my JKUR. I run that app on it and love it. The interesting choice after that is which map source to use (or multiple). They have access to some good free ones and some paid "premium" ones.
I second that. I use MotionX for biking, hiking, hunting, etc. The app's maps are good but you can also download any oother maps like Google, USGS, etc. Great app that has a lot of different activity-specific features.
Anyone have an objective comparison between MotionX and Gaia GPS on IPhone? I like MotionX for its simplicity and with gpx files available on traildamage.com it seems like the inexpensive choice. But it appears as though Gaia has many more tracks available with the sharing? How about usage and map quality? Is it worth the extra $$.

After reviewing MotionX in both Moab and Ouray recently I can report that this product, which some prep work, will keep you on the right trail. We rode 3 or 4 trail in both locations using cached (downloaded offline) maps and GPS files downloaded from web. Worked flawlessly keeping me on the intended trail even in places where numerous unmarked tracks existed.
The only con, which really is not the app, is the quality of the GPS unit in my iPhone. The updates are kind of slow, but we are not exactly running a race so this did not impact my usage or navigation. Definitely not a precise as dedicated unit, but also not near the cost.
Can you load any of the maps on the 430 Jeep nav are do you just use your phone with these apps?
I have the Moab book mentioned (GPS coordinates listed) and would like to have something set up for trails before a trip there in September. Using the 430n screen would be my first choice, but I have also considered a separate handheld GPS or just one of the phone app's. Any thoughts?
somewhat OT but I tried to use an iPhone app for keeping track of where we were while hiking trails in Oregon. The phone was poor at receiving GPS signals so the app failed.
Bought a hand held Garmin GPS and it is much better at receiving the signals.
Phone apps are limited by the GPS receiver capability of your phone.
I chose to use a large Garmin rv 760 as both a backup camera and lifetime maps/gps/traffic...
but it serves double duty in the rv when the jeep is being towed behind...
A benefit of having a dedicated trail GPS (I use a Garmin 62s) is that you can create your own routes on it or go to GPS file exchange and get tracks there to make sure you are on target.
Now I use that for the dirt bike mainly, but the concept is similar in the Jeep- when we do the Rubicon, we use a track that was there- more kinda for fun, but you get the point.
Also, you can use the PC based software to explore an area or put a number of tracks together or whatever. I've been doing this for many years all over the US, Baja, and Europe and it really is nice to have.
Motion-X on iPad Air 2 with Bad Elf for connectivity. Use the iPad to also control my GoPro.
