Question What happens if you crash during a test drive?

I was just curious. Does the test-driver have to pay for damages? Does the dealer's insurance cover everything?

No segue here, just crossed my mind this morning. I'm sure someone on here has a story...

Guess it would depend on what happened. I have at times wondered that myself. But im sure the dealer has some kind of insurance to pay for it. They just might get pissed if went somewhere else and bought.

I'd imagine the test driver would be on the hook to pay the dealership's deductible for their insurance to cover it.

Their insurance will take care of it which is why Dealer plates are insanely expensive to have. There are so many variable to insure, the vehicle and the driver changes constantly so they generally have a high liability to cover the dealership, or at least should. In any case the dealerships insurance should cover damages if indeed it was an accident. If you deliberately decide to take your test drive vehicle off-road, without their permission, and roll it then they may come after you.

dealers insurance umbrella covers the accident if you're at fault.

I would think that unless you've signed something that transfers liability to you (like when you rent a car), the dealer has to eat the loss to their vehicle, but you'd still be liable for any damages to others if you are at fault. The dealer could also sue you for damages to their vehicle. In both cases, your own insurance should protect you but you should review the terms in your policy relating to the use of non-owned vehicles.

I had to show proof of insurance when I test drove but I also told the salesman I did not want him with me when I did it.

This is the reason why we just putz around the car lot and then let the salesperson take it for a spin with us in it. Funny thing. I have never, ever taken test drive on any of the new vehicles that I have purchased. The JKU was the fourth new vehicle, and I did not even drive him for the first time until a few days after we brought him home.

Great Question...learned about this with a rental car. Your insurance would cover the damages...however in the rental case we had to pay for the rental car for the 3 weeks it was in the repair shop. Learned this the hard way, when renting, get the additional insurance they offer.

I've wondered this myself. Especially in Tucson. Mexico plates on a lot of the cars and no insurance on their end. It's one of the reasons I didn't even test drive either of my jeeps. I'd owned em before figured that was good enough for me.

Maybe this was why the Tucson Chrysler Dealership had me show proof of insurance?

I had the opposite happen several years ago.... A service employee at the dealership got into an accident with my car while I had it in for service!

It was relatively minor - they had to replace the front bumper. Looking back on it, I should have put the screws to them, but I was young and naive. They gave me a crappy rental car and eventually the paint peeled on the new bumper - but by the time that happened, the dealership was out of business.

The dealership has sole responsibility for any damage unless you sign something stating otherwise.

Funny thing is I have never test drove any new vehicle I have purchased since that's the 1st thing a salesman wants you to do, because most folks buy with emotion, then justify with logic. I buy with logic and justify with emotion. Drives them F'ing nuts. Then on top of that I make them drive the new vehicle following me to my house. That is the icing on the Cake!!!

Sales 101. I have been in sales (Not Automobile) a very long time and never sold anything. I just let people buy! I just give them options and let them decide. People love to buy, but they hate to be sold!!!

You have to put on a fez and drive one of those little Shriner's cars with a license plate that says "I M STPD" back to the dealership.
