What is a normal deposit for a new order?

Greetings all, lurker gone public here...

I live in Salt Lake City and the local dealer here told me they want a $2,000.00 non-refundable deposit in order for them to place a custom order JK 2 door. They also said it would be 90 to 120 days until I get my Jeep. WTF?

The "pit boss" or whatever that position is said that they need that in case they are unable to sell it if I decide I do not want it. Oh please! I doubt they will have a hard time selling a fully loaded 2 door 2012 Rubicon at the start of the model year. They are the biggest Jeep dealership in Utah.

Just out of curiosity, what did most of you have to put down in a deposit to place your orders and was it refundable?

I bought my first custom ordered jeep from them in 1997 and they only wanted a $500 deposit and that was refundable.

My fear is that the Jeep comes in and is not configured properly or has damage, that they will end up trying to keep the money. I didn't have that great of an experience with them on my first Jeep and I am questioning myself about possibly buying another one from them but my choices here are limited.

I am actually going to Chicago on Thursday and I told my significant other I might have to stop at Fields Jeep and talk to Pat to place my order.

My order consisted of a phone call to the dealership and no money exchanged.

I gave them $500 in good faith, but get that back if the Jeep isn't as ordered or is damaged.

Don't walk, RUN away from that dealership and find one that wants your business.

It shouldn't take that long to get a new jeep built. It took my jeep 6 weeks to get ordered and delivered to the dealership. I've seen some get done in 4 weeks or less. I think the average is about 8 weeks.

I didn't pay a deposit for my order. I guess the dealership figured that if I changed my mind, they would just sell it as any other new 2012. The dealer also gets the added bonus of pushing your "Sold" order through the jeep build process faster than a normal order. If you don't want it, they get a 2012 jeep on their lot faster than a normal order because "Sold" orders are supposed to go to the front of the assembly line. Their story about taking so long to get you a 2012 sounds like BS.

$1,000 deposit. Dealer implied that it was not refundable, using the same "if we can't sell it, we're stuck with it" line that AMagnum heard. I read all the docs and there was nothing there indicating that deposits are not refundable, which is reinforced by conversations with other dealers. I've been told MANY times that one can walk away for any reason, including "I changed my mind" and will get the deposit back. I suspect that there would be much huffing and puffing on the part of my dealer, but in the end I don't doubt that I could get the money back if I chose to try.

Note that when stating that "they'd be stuck with it," the GM also said that he was giving me a discounted deposit rate, as I'd ordered a "normal" Jeep. Had I ordered a purple vehicle with yellow interior, for instance, it would have been $5,000.

After taking delivery, I'll not be returning to this particular dealer.

I put 500 down on my 10 Rubi order because I wanted to. There were no problems. I would go to another dealer.

Zero down. Talked to dealer and said I will use Tread Lightly and he thought that was a cash deal. Jeep arrived in 6 weeks and sprung the 2009 as trade in after the final price with Treadlightly on the 2012. Dealer was like do you want to come work for me?

I test drove a 2011 Unlimited Rubicon, then a 2011 GC, ordered 2012 GC Overland with off road package, used Tread Lightly. Put $500 deposit with dealer. Day before the GC was delivered to dealer I found a New Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon at nearby dealer. Called my salesman that morning and told him I changed my mind, told him of Wrangler I wanted, he said he would have it for me by noon.

Now have my 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon in all white, Great Dealer to work with.

Custom order ( no other one exactly like it), $0 deposit, Dealer had Jeep District Sales Manager personally expedite the build and delivery, five weeks from order submission to sitting in my garage, paid $1100 under invoice, dealer gives me 10+% off on service and parts, ride to wherever I need to go if I don't feel like hanging around during service appointment, has always super helpful and fixed the only two items that were wrong with my Jeep on the first try.

I think my dealership is great. I wish for your sake you had one just like it in SLC.

When I ordered mine last year. I gave them either $200 or $500 Deposit ( good Faith ) / the order took about 6-7 weeks. They were checking on it weekly for me.

Dealer wanted $500 refundable earnest money to order, I gave them $1000. I also got a written agreement that they would honor the Tread Lightly/Chrysler Affiliates price at the same time.

I tried to buy a Saturn Sky Redline several years ago. $500 fully refundable deposit. Unfortunately, with their limited builds of Sky period, with a more limited manual, with a more limited Redline edition, with a more limited Bluestone color.... Year and a half later I finally asked for my deposit back. Got it the same day credited back to the credit card. I would NEVER do any deposit that is not fully refundable. And I would never do anything more than $500 any similarly-priced vehicle.

Just reread your original post where you said you did not have a great experience with your first purchase from that dealer...I guess you must have a good reason to consider becoming a repeat customer.

I am not being sarcastic, just trying to figure out why you would go back there when there are four or five other Jeep dealers within 25 miles of SLC.

Like others all I had to do was pick up the phone tell the sales manager what I wanted and didnt pay a dime till they got it in. I guess it kinda helps when your family has been buying from the same man for 20 pluss years.

I had been in contact with the Internet manager looking for a 2011 when I decided to instead Order a 2012....I just went in and placed the order. They didn't ask for or even mention me putting a deposit down.....However another dealer in town that had tried to get me to order with them instead mentioned a $1000 deposit (heck with that IMO)

Man just reading this thread makes me want to open a exclusive only Jeep dealership that caters to clientele that want. Jeep wrangler forum owners a fair deal and provide customer service level where the sale is part of a mini Jeep jamboree in the back lot for you to test your potential new jeep that is paired just to you.
Man you talk about that.

That is a really good question for which I should have an answer, but the only thing I can come up with is that they are very close to me. Perhaps I am basing this off the expectation that I will be in the shop a few times since my first Jeep was in the shop 23 times before the warranty expired (was a bit of a lemon).

I did stop by on the way home from work again tonight just to see if the salesman was able to get that ridiculous deposit requirement removed. Turns out the salesman wasn't even working today even though he told me he would be there today. He was also going to check to see if he could find exactly what I was looking for and bring it to their dealership and never did that either.

Luckily there was another salesman who was very helpful and as soon as I told him about the deposit requirement, he laughed and dismissed it. He said he would place the order for me in the morning without any deposit but if I want to make sure the vehicle does not get test driven or put out in the front of the lot for other customers and salesman to sit in, they would want a $500 fully refundable deposit to hold it in my name. That sounded a hell of a lot more reasonable as a reason to ask for a deposit in my opinion.

I greatly appreciate everyone's input. This forum is a wonderful source of information.

IMVHO, I think repeat business to a dealership/service department that doesn't give you top notch service is just rewarding bad behavior. I have a dealership that is 1 mile from me and they royally fubared my first Jeep order and basically dismissed me as an intelligent consumer. I took my business elsewhere and would have no issue doing it again. The only way this places will learn that they 'norm' for business is wrong is if they lose money!
