What is this part?

It appeared on my passenger side floor mat after hitting a bump in the road. Looks like a retainer of some sort but I can't tell from where. Any ideas?

Is it a manual? If it is, then its the retainer that holds down the inner shift boot. The one that keeps all the heat of the engine bay from coming into the cabin.

Look up under the dash behind the glove box, there are two posts that the carpet goes over and those screw to the posts to hold the carpet in place.

Thanks for the prompt replies. The carpet retainer behind the glove box theory sounds most plausible given where it landed. I heard it make a ringing/rattling sound right after I hit a sharp bump (pavement transition where they were milling the surface but stopped at a concrete bridge). I will check it out tonight. Thanks again!
