What not to do during recovery!

We spent the last week down in OBX. We stayed in one of the houses only accessible by the beach road. It was about 7 miles up the sand so we spent a good bit of time running up and down the beach over the course of the week. Saw lots of stuck vehicles but each time they already had help getting them unstuck so I never stopped to offer help.

On our last evening there we were coming back from dinner and came across a caravan of 3 vehicles with everyone standing around doing nothing. I stopped and asked if they needed help. They said they had been there for 20+ minutes unable to get the one vehicle in their caravan unstuck that had become stuck. The driver said he had tried 2wd, 4wd, and Awd all with no effect. Hmmm 2wd didn't help? Shocking.

I asked if they had recovery gear to pull it out and they pointed to some cargo tie downs. I said that is okay I have some gear with me.

I ran my strap through his hitch, secured it with a pin and then connected it to my bumper. I told him I would pull him out to the hard pack so that he could drive back from that point under his own power. For the most part that is all I said before jumping in and starting to pull him out. My mistake.

I pulled him out to the hard pack and stopped. He then panicked or something and laid into the gas. He just missed clipping me, shot right past me and jerked to a stop when he ran out of slack between us giving me a good yank sideways in the process.

I was pretty ticked but I kept my cool, gathered up my gear and went on my way.

I'm sure some of you have better recovery gone wrong stories than that one. I'd love to hear them as future food for thought.

Apologies on this missing the best/worst part but my wife was freaking out a little and lost focus on the camera. I had our kids in the car and she was unsure how it was going to end. She was way more ticked than I was.

Good story, but be glad you're not this Cherokee owner:

The money shot is starts at about 1:50 with "turn that wheel to the right"

Nothing like a large displacement chipped turbo diesel.

That was my first thought when I saw this thread. People just don't get it. I am to the point that I make them turn the engine off, when possible, or just drive on watching them flip me off in the rear view mirror.

I love hearing that big diesel spool up.

All that torque and 9000# is just going to rip that 3500# Cherokee out of the creek bed. (the pickup owner should have to known what to expect)

I am going as far as to make people sign off on a statement before I pull them sometimes. Most of the time though, I go over everything we are going to do and how before I get started - most of the time I have a good person that just got stuck and doesn't even know where to begin, so teaching them how to get themselves out is more important then getting them out.

I was down there in June and saw plenty of stuck vehicles. That tow truck on 44's (or whatever) was always lurking close by though. I only offered to help a Grand Cherokee that was stuck behind the dunes but he had already called the wrecker. Wonder what that guy charges?

I see and have helped many that have a winch on there jeep and have no idea how it works or if it works and I'm shocked at how many of them don't work, it seems to be the cheap one's that got submerged that don't work.
The last guy I tried to help want me to use my winch so not to get his winch cable muddy. As far as I know he is still in that mud hole.

I told my wife if we ever encounter a similar scenario again she is sitting behind the wheel of the other vehicle while they watch. Unless it is someone we already know of course.

I saw that tow truck. It was running doorless all week. That could be a fun/interesting job to do I'm sure.

Jesus man, sorry but that video was funny as hell!
Now I understand why she cut the vid short.

This situation is EXACTLY why I prefer to use the winch to pull people out.
More specifically, people I don't know.

If thier engine is off they can't freak out and ram into me or panic and drive off a cliff while I'm still strapped to them.
I just tell them to put in in neutral and let the winch do all the work.

Wheeling buddies I can trust with a snatch strap. Heck, we use a 8 foot tree saver most of the time and never tangle bumpers. Just quick pull if high centered.

Strangers in stock rigs with no offroad experience at all freak me out.

Lol, nothing to be sorry for. You can laugh. No one was hurt and it is kind of funny my otherwise calm wife yelling "Dude" followed by things that couldn't be replayed.

I almost winched him just as an excuse to use it. I likely wouldn't have thought to ask him to get out though which would have bit me bad in light of what happened. I'm sure him doing the same thing attached to my winch would have caused me some damage.

Maybe he was looking to repay the favor by towing you someplace..... There were other Jeeps there, no one else offered to help him? Did you have your tires aired down?

Ha, maybe that was his plan. That was nice of him.

The one Jeep was in his group, clueless, and without any recovery gear. The other one was a guy from NY (in a sweet JKU) that rolled up just as I was pulling him out.

I was aired down to 18 all week. Never even came close to getting stuck once the entire week.
