Doing my 2012 JKU's first oil change this weekend, just wanted to see what others are using.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic in my 2011 JK.

What do you prefer and why (if you have some sort of fact to back your reasoning that would be great too)

:Thanx:

+1 for M1

Everything else is really overkill, although high-end synthetics are certainly better.

Since the motors take 6 quarts, do you guys usually buy one 5 quart jug and one matching 1 quart bottle?

Also, when I did my own oil change this past weekend, the dipstick showed full after 5.75 quarts, so I didn't bother putting the last quarter quart in, figuring that a little bit simply didn't drain out (Jeep was parked on flat ground, and I let the oil drain until no more dripping). Do you guys experience this?

I have found this to be the case with almost every car/truck I have owned. I changed mine and like you said 5.75 put it at top of full mark.
It varies with filter size and time allowed to drain. Plan your oil change and do it in the morning before you start for the day if you really want a full six qt change

From what I understand, cold oil is more viscous and it's likely that a bit more will stay inside the engine if you try to drain it in the morning. Also, I heard that the contaminates in the oil settle when the engine is cold and some will stay inside the motor or pan.

More oil will come out if it's hot, since it flows much better and is less likely to stick to the walls inside the engine. Of course, some will always stay "stuck" inside the ports, pump, etc. no matter when you change it.

remember if you're not opening and removing the oil cartridge BEFORE you open the drain plug, you're not getting all of the old oil out...this, oil temp and time you let it drain can affect how much it takes to get the level to full on the dipstick. IIRC I let mine drain for over an hour (Very hot oil) and still had oil dripping out of the pan at a frequent drip rate.

Synthetic for the Jeeps, I will probably go with Mobile 1 or Valvoline. Porsche uses no synthetic and has Rotella Dino.

Take the Jeep out for a quick drive around the block before changing the oil. I do about a 2-5 mile drive to heat things up.

For you scientists out there with no personailty, I was being fececious. Hoe the F in the right mind is gonna expect all 6qt to drain out under most circumstances with an oil change. Also, who the F is gonna leave there vehicle to sit for and hour plus with the drain plug out waiting for the oil to stop dripping. Sometimes you folks are ridiculous. PS, there are about fifty other threads that also argue brand and procedure already. To the OP; use a new oil of your preference and within your budget. Even conventional oils, if you desire to use, can give great protection for your jeeps engine. Mobil 1 is popular and well advertised, great product. Use what you want, just be vigilant to drain it out when its time and you wont have any oil related engine failures. To the smartie that said his filter is a canister type and does not vary in size, no kidding. I was writing generically speaking regarding reasons capacity can vary.

I do. I do it on a cold motor (all the oil is in the pan), set up the drain pan, undo the drain plug, and go about my day, letting the oil drain all day. Then, I come home, put the drain plug back, fill her up, and that's all she wrote. If I am in a hurry, I'll do the oil change another day. It's just OCD. There is no need for that. When the drain is dripping less than one drop every 10 seconds, go ahead and put the bolt back in, and fill to the correct level.

Well....I had time to burn this past Sunday morning......so I let the oil drain for about 80 minutes to get out as much of the spent oil as possible. I don't do work on my vehicles unless I have time to spare....you never know when something might break....but that's just me.
