Talking What should I look for when buying a used Jeep?

Been looking for a little while, but really not sure what to look for in a used Jeep. Saw this one 2007 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited 4x4 4wd 4dr clean title 1 owner and it looks like a pretty good deal. For $3000 in upgrades I think this could make a pretty nice rig and I'm still only in it for $20000! Let me know, all help would be appreciated!

something with low miles is what I would look for in any used car..

at 120k you are almost guaranteed to have issues soon.

I guess that brings up the question.... What is the life expectancy of a Jeep? We have an '08 Ford Escape (FWD) with 110,000 miles and have done nothing but change the oil and filler up with fuel and I would expect it to go another 100,000 miles with out any major issues. Are there known issues at 100K, 120K, etc... I know a lot of that would depend on the driving conditions, but I'm assuming most Jeeps, in urban service, are simply grocery getters and never really see off road conditions, as opposed to a Jeep in, let's say Moab!

One of the main issues with the 3.8 is excessive oil consumption. They don't all do it, and I'm not sure if there are any telltale signs like a sooty exhaust.

Honestly, if the Rubicon isn't a necessity, I'd be looking for a '12 Sport. The Pentastar has its issues, but makes way more power and will likely have way lower mileage for similar money.

Good luck!

Look at a brand new JK sport .If you watch what you are doing you can get into one for not much more than some of the used ones.

X2^

When I bought my Jeep I started out looking for a used one. In my case, I ended up deciding I wouldn't save enough buying used to make up for the benefits of a new jeep.

If take the 11 Rubi over a 12 sport. depending on cost obviously. Remember it has 4:10 gears which help the 3.8

Oil burning was common with my 07 and I think 08's.

My other concern with the '11 Rubi is the owner said he had to replace the shocks, something about the bushings wore out, is this common? The mileage is really what turns me off about the whole deal, with proper maint. and NOT thrashing them, how long are the 3.8L's good for???? 100K, 200K ???? Any reliability reports? This will be for my wife to drive and I can't afford for her to be broke down!!!

Again Thanks for your input!!!!!

Ok, I drove the Rubi, everything seems to be in order , steering was pretty tight, little bit of body roll in quick back and forth turns at say 20 mph, the Jeep is clean as a pin, no scrapes on the skidplates, no oil anywhere, looks like a new one! I did notice that when in reverse it took a lot of throttle to get it moving? Is that the 3.8L showing it's true colors? Really on the fence about this..... Any idea on the longevity of the 3.8L? Anything I can check to get a better feel on the vehicle? Any local enthusiasts that like to pick over it with me?

Have found a lot of great information on here, thanks for all the hard work on website!

It sounds like you did a good job looking it over. I haven't shopped for used jeeps since 2010, but the price seems ok. I think you just need to weigh price, mileage, and features. If you don't need the Rubi features, you may be able to swing a new sport or Sahara that has a warranty.

Accuracy of predictability of any used rig you chose is tenuous at best.

In my own shopping for a Jeep, exposure to the market over about a year of my search, found this handy chart:

YMMV:
0~20k miles = "New"
20~50k miles = "used"
50~100k = "well used"
100k + = "old"

each level of use increases the wear factors on the rig, and varying repair cost potential as mileage increases

The closer to the top (ie, less miles) usually finds increased asking price, to where at some point a NEW dealer price is not much different in payment land

Whatever the 'mods' installed, do you really want them, and did it make the previous own keep his Jeep?

I drove many Jeeps both new & used in learning what to expect vs what I thought I wanted.

Don't be in a hurry, there's always a better deal price wise and
condition wise, that will appear just after you commit to what you think is a great deal.

3 years ago I was ready to buy a new JKU. At the last moment, I found a cream puff JK Sahara with 15000 miles on it for a spectacular price. To date, it's given me 48000 miles of grins and smiles with no headaches....and with my conservative use it remains in spectacular condition....yet the aging and wear process is beginning to show now at 63000 total.

Would I personally buy the same rig with 63000 let alone 120,000???

The price would have to be REALLY good.

Finding the right Jeep is like a hunt for a trophy buck IMHO....if you're looking for 'just the right one' you look at a LOT of possibles before you make the call.

When you get to where you can tell yes/no according to YOUR needs, you will really KNOW when the right one presents itself.

I always smile when someone says "clean title". I mean what is the alternative, a dirty title?, no title? a Katrina or Hurricane Sandy title?

Anyway - My first Jeep was a 2008 2 DR JK Rubicon. I bought it at Honda Dealers lot. It had 29,000 miles on it. And Zero Mods. I got the Carfax on it. Showed small accident where they replaced the front bumper.

That is the kind of used Jeep I look for. In an odd lot (not Jeep dealer). No Mods and very clean. I had it till this August. Put 25,000 miles on it and had zero problems. No oil consumption. I took it everywhere - Colorado Mountains - 14,000 feet, wheeling in off road parks and three trips from KC to East Coast. Third trip there - I brought back a '14 JKU Rubicon. My son had a favorite dealer....

So when I look - I want to get a used one from someone who bought a Jeep by mistake and didn't know what they were getting into, were afraid to go off road and didn't put any mods on it. Then I get a clean, lightly used Jeep that I can cut loose on with my mods.

Good luck in your hunt - that in itself is fun!!

This title status is important to know. It could have a salvage title (which I would only consider buying in rare occasions), a bonded title, a rebuilt vehicle title, or the title could be out of state (which could require extra steps to transfer).

In Texas, you generally want a "clean blue title". This means it is not a salvage or rebuilt vehicle and all liens are clear.

What do you think?
If your going to that price point.. go buy a brand new one with the options you want and build it how you want it. You can find 4dr sports for around 25k and rubi in the low 30's.

Thanks for the heads up..... However I'd then throw another $5000 into it for wheels, tires, lift, rock rails, etc... and it still want have leather seats, power windows or a decent sound system I just really don't see the appeal of taking the "new car" hit when someone else already has and I can save $5000 or $6000..... Am I missing something?

To me, it is all about risk. 5k is about 17% of the cost for a new sport. I would rather pay the extra $5k and put my wife in a new vehicle with a warranty than risk inheriting someone else's problem. Basically, the used jeep prices are just too high for it to make sense to buy used.

Besides, if you buy new, you get to pick out your own mods instead of settling for what someone else did.

Now if they will come down to about $18k, I would think about it.

Sorry for the confusion... The wife is out!!!!! She test drove one and absolutely HATED the ride, too rough, stiff and choppy! I told her "It's a Jeep!", her response was, well then, they are not for me. SO that being said this is a Jeep for ME!!!! I found this one at a local dealer and am thinking I could get it for right at $30K Only thing about it I'm confused about is the radio / Bluetooth / Uconnect / Alpine Premium which is $1500 total, seems a bit high.

I don't know about the costs for bells and whistles. My jeep is a 2010 2-door. The only options are AC and 3.73 gears. I didn't want a bunch of extra electrical stuff on a jeep.
