what winch to buy

;I haven't been off road in 17 yrs., so please be gentle. Just purchased 2012 rubicon. I have front & rear JCR bumpers, Bushwacker flat fenders ( pocket style too big ) and ACE rails ordered. I need some input on what would be a GOOD winch without overkill. Plus, steel or synthetic cable?.... My wife and I have done the Rubicon and Sierra Trec a couple of times with the Reno NV club and the Bakersfield Ca club. This is our 4th jeep ...All silver ( black fenders soon ), first time auto tranny, 730/ nav. So far, Love IT

If you look at post #29. It has links to some reviews and comments about winches. Hope this helps.

In my opinion if you want the best get a Warn but its not the least expensive by a long shot. I have a Warn 9.5 cti with cable waiting to install on my 12 Rubicon MW3 COD. Over the years i have owned a Warn 6,000 pounder which was on my CJ5 and a Warn 8,000 pound which was on my TJ. Never a minutes trouble out of either. Cable has been used for years, i have never used synthetic rope and do not plan to use it so no experience there.

If you are going to wheel and use one then go with a warn. I would buy used and then put a synthetic line like master pull on it. 8274-50 is a pimping wich with stupid fast line speed. They use to come on the CJ's stock (8274)back in the day but you can still buy new or used.

If you want it for looks (smitty or something else) or need cheaper than a warn but still good, go with Engo. Synthetic line creates less weight on the front end and not to mention is safer.

+1 for Warn. It's more money up front but even after years of use, they seldom fail. If they do, you can easily get parts for them. My last 4 winches were Warn. Syn line is better, but that's another $200+ when you add the required hawse fairleed.

I say buy the brand you can get parts to repair it if it needs repair. There are a lot of inexpensive winches on the market that will work as designed but parts are not available, therefore they become disposable winches. There are a lot of good used Warn winches on the bulletin boards like Craigslist and EBay that can be bought for the price of a new Chinese made winch.

Engo, Recon, Warn…In that order

Warn is 3rd because of their ridiculous price. Look up the 4 Wheel Magazine winch shootout. Engo should have been # 1.
