I have pretty much ran Valvoline in all my vehicles for the last 30 years. When I got my first car, a close family friend that ran a garage swore by it. I took his advice and never looked back. Never had any oil issues in 30 years

I would say it is a personal choice from experience. I would think the best question is whether any oil isn't recommended. To many very good oils to choice from but what is the bad ones?

Lot's of opinions here, some documentation but not much. Pretty much change it often and go from there. right? When gas is almost $4 a gallon who is going to gripe about a 3,500 mile oil change?

The owners manual and factory recommendations is the best way to go... but I personally pump oil from the ground then filter it through a coffee filter. It works great!

Full Synthetic. The other stuff has dinosaur skin in it which doesn't lubricate as well. Use Jeep recommendations for weight, which may vary according to location, season, and climate.

Mobil 1 was first to market with full syn, so that's what I've always used. Always use the lightest weight [range] recommended, unless you have consumption problems, in which case a heavier weight MIGHT help, depending on the actual cause of excess consumption.

Ive heard the -20s make the 3.6s knock, id go with -30

If you check the owner's manual, the Pentastar wants 5W-30. I believe the 5W-20 was for the older 3.8 engine.

I know, but some brilliant people think the -20 will make starts in the winter less harsh on the engine , which it does, but once tHe engine warms up its terrible for it. Lmao

Any major brand synthetic. On a side note, Royal Purple is garbage. It is not only a terrible synthetic oil, it is barely comparable to a good quality dino oil. RP has SEVERE breakdown at 1K, has terrible effects on valvetrains (especially lifters) etc. Don't waste your money and don't buy it. If you are going to drop the coin on premium synthetic (waste in non sports/race cars) buy Amsoil.

Amsoil is indeed the best oil (and tranny fluid, etc) but overkill for a Jeep. Race cars and sports car with high compression motors, high revving, etc will benefit from it, but on a Jeep, it's not necessary. Go to autozone or the store of your choice, and pick up a major brand quality synthetic (Mobil, valvoline, castrol, etc) and buy whichever one is on sale, usually, it's Mobil 1.

BTW, RP was caught lying, claiming their oils are fully synthetic, when they were just blends. BBB has complaints on this. It is just dino oil with synthetic additives.

Not to bash you but please explain how it would be overkill for a jeep? jeep engines are subject to way more heat "being trails etc." where you dont have proper air flow to cool. and still have the same compression if not more then most sports cars. I think my 7k redline is a decently high revving engine. Not to mention most are lifted and struggling to turn huge tires. hell there 32"s stock.

Personally i wouldnt touch royal purple ever again, ive owned 3 sports cars that have used it and 2 of em had smoking issues after extensive use " about 5-8 oil changes" never had a problem with amsoil. use it in my rocket, my harley, atv, and cars.. only downfall is its not usually readily available and is pretty expensive. Tests dont lie, amsoil just doesnt have the marketing power that the bigger companys do.

Engine, diffs, tranny, transfer case are all getting GODS LUBE "amsoil" when the time comes. I just turned 904 miles lol

Tests dont lie, amsoil just doesnt have the marketing power that the bigger companys do.

Engine, diffs, tranny, transfer case are all getting GODS LUBE "amsoil" when the time comes. I just turned 904 miles lol
Like I said, I agree with you that Amsoil is THE BEST oil out there, but IMHO, oil like Mobil1 is more than sufficient for a Wrangler. The reason race motors are more sensitive is due to the fact that they spend a lot of time sitting at or near redline, and are built with more fraile components. The Jeep motor is a more stout motor, so it is not nearly as sensitive as a race/sports car motor, with MUCH tighter tolerances and compression ratios.

Amsoil isn't as easy to get, costs more, for a negligible reward, thus, I recommended any major brand fully synthetic oil. If you buy your oil by the 5 gallon jug, then by all means, run Amsoil. It definitely wont HURT the truck.

Must be a Canadian thing, but I can get Amsoil cheaper shipped to my house than I can get Mobile 1 at Wallyworld. If Mobil 1 was cheaper, I'd go with it for the JK.

Just paid $48 for 6 shipped works out to $8/qt. Mobile 1 runs 10-$12/L

first oil change i went full synthetic. used the free oil change cert. from jeep and applied it as credit towards the synthetic.

Yea, Mobil1 is definitely cheaper here. You can get it for under $5 a bottle if you buy a case from say Costco.

Yea, if you buy it by the single quart, you will pay the most. Try to buy the gallon or 5qt containters from Walmart, or the cases at Costco.

Think I'm going to try that Amsoil on the next change...we'll see though. I've got a free oil change next at the dealer. Maybe after that. Good thread.

I am a true believer in synthetic oils, especially if you follow the 8k oil and filter change as recommended in by Jeep. The extra money is well worth knowing you are "pampering" your engine just in case it is a sensitive one! ;o)

Just read that oil bible book and I am going to give the synthetic amsoil a go for on my next oil change for sure. it's a good read for people like myself who had no idea about oil besides the two main types of oil synthetic and basic petroleum.

There are going to be a ton of "opinions" on a thread like this which is why I almost didn't post. There will be favorites that people have with nothing to substantiate their claim, just warm and fuzzies. In some cases I could fall under the same category, in others I have personal experiences after wrenching on about anything and everything with an engine for the past 20+ years.

That said, each vehicle manufacturer will require a certain oil specification when they design a new engine (or trans or whatever). When they disignate an oil classification to that engine (or whatever) then the oil manufacturers will create an oil to meet that classification. This is why the oil classification and weight are much more important when choosing an oil rather than a brand. The oil's must meet those demands to carry the classification.

Now on to weights, weights are also determined by engine design due to things like low point flowability (ability to pump)as well as oil clearances in bearings, lifters, etc. This is where a lot of debate comes in to play because right now the EPA carries a big stick in the fact that each of the manufactureres must meet a certain criteria called CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) meaning the vehicles that they manufacture must average a certain MPG rating. From the largest most fuel demanding vehicles to the smallest most efficient.

In order to be able to sell the larger less fuel efficient vehicles the manufacturers must get their smaller more fuel efficient miles per gallon as high as possible. They did this somewhat with the Jeep Wrangler when they required the 5W-20 weight oil. This light oil actually minimized the amount of power to pump the oil and the residual drag on the crankshaft and other components that must spin in this oil.

If you look at the oil classification that Jeep requires for their engines, it is a ISLAC-GF4 and a MS6395 classification. They would like you to use 5W-20 due to the fuel economy. If you look at most of the major oil manufacturers they also have a 5W-30 and even a 10W-30 that carries these same classifications and some even a higher classification such as Mobil 1, Valvoline SynPower and I am sure of others. They carry the MS6395 but also carry a ISLAC-GF5 classification.

Sorry for the long drawn out explanation but I just wanted you to have as much information possible to make your decision vs. everyones "opinions" as to which oil to run.

There are more oil debates and explanations on the internet that a person would have time to read in a lifetime but these are just the highlights.

As far as petroleum vs. synthetic oils there again too much to ever read about. They both have to hit the same criteria on an oil classification. Petroleum oils do a fine job of performing what they were designed for as long as the engines (or whatever) are operated within the parameters that they were designed for. That said, when they start stepping outside the parameters the petroleum oils seem to breakdown a little sooner than the synthetics. This is why the synthetics may be a little better choice for those "extreme" conditions. I am not a fan of extended oil drain intervals but I know that is one of the synthetics big selling techniques.

In my wife's daily driver and my Duramax which sees interstate miles and nothing out of the ordinary I run petroleum oil as well as my coach. As for my sandrail and some of our race quads I run synthetics due to the operating conditions and demands placed on them. I also run synthetic oil in my Jeep due to the demands that will be placed on it when slow off-roading in high temperatures. Although I could probably get away with a pertroleum oil in my Jeep I just decided to run synthetics, more of a personal choice than anything scientific to defend that decision.


As for my personal "opinion", I have run Valvoline in everything of mine for the past 20+ years with great results and currently in my 2011 Jeep with the 3.8 engine I am running Valvoline SynPower 5W-30 oil and WIX filters.

As you can see - tons of opinions.

A few pointers.
1. I have never heard of an engine failure due to lack of lubrication when properly maintained with the correct weight quality oil (i.e. any name brand).
2. Changing your oil when needed (not sur ewhat '12 are on - 5,000 miles?) and your filter are much more important than oil brand.

Now, if you routinely run in situations that heat up you oil, a synthetic will be better. But for everyday use, conventional oils are 100% fine. Any larger name brand will generally do.

More than oil brand, these are the things to worry about.
- oil viscosity.
- oil filtration (buy a high quality filter - much more important than which oil brand today)
- maintenance (changing of oil and filter)
- proper engine operations (one needs to run engines for about 20 min for them to fully heat up oil and vent off water than collects from natural breathing).

I think a lot of people use oil that is over engineered for their requirements. What they "thought" they needed vs. what they "actually" needed.

People are also very emotionally attached to the oil of their choice which makes defending and/or educating much more difficult.

I switched to amsoil last year and haven't looked back since. It may appear expensive but there are two ways to look at that.

1) How far away do you live from where your buying your oil? If you live about 7-8 miles away, you have to add in the cost of a gallon of gas to what you paid for the oil. Amsoil comes to my door for $50 for 6 quarts ($8.33/quart)

2) Order in bulk. The more you buy, the cheaper shipping is, if it is $10 for one case, it might only be $15 for two cases ( $7.50 each). I'm not saying buy a few years worth of oil changes at once, I'm saying plan your projects. Own 2 or more vehicles? change them all at the same time. I recently ordered 6 qts of oil and shipping was $10, before that, I ordered 15 qts of oil, and 4 bottles of fuel additive and shipping was only $18... So buy it all at once!

Also, if your considering amsoil, look into the prefered membership. One oil change on my truck (at 12 quarts) pays for it in savings.

I will probably be placing another order in about a month:
6 qts oil for jeep
Whatever is needed for transmission, transfer case and both diffs
12 qts oil for truck
Whatever is needed for diff and for installing a transmission temp gauge.
More fuel additives for my diesel

So probably close to or over 30 qts in all. My wallet is going to hate me...

Amsoil and Redline, along with Motul, Total- all excellent. However, Mobil 1, Castrol, German Castrol, Quaker State and Pennzoil are also perfect for your car. I prefer synthetic but dino works fine as long as you change within 5,000 miles. After a lot of research and after using all the exotic oils, I now use Mobil 1 Extended Performance and German Castrol. Their UCAs are just as good as the best exotics that cost at least twice as much. Royal Purple- nope, not gonna use it. It's no better than regular oil at twice the cost.

I have been using Napa brand oil for almost 30 years now. I change oil every 3000 miles and always use a Napa Gold Oil filter. Ashland Oil makes the oil for Napa, as they do for Vavoline. If my memory is right, Napa's filters are made by Wix. I have never had a problem, other than our 2011 JKUR. It's engine let go with the oil the factory put in it! I use Napa 15w-50 full synthetic in my Harley and have done so for every Harley I have owned. It gets changed every 2000 miles because I tend to push the scooter hard. I say use what works for you when it comes to oil, just change it at regular intervals and use a good filter. Still waiting for a Harley Edition JKU with a Hemi!

Correct. The NAPA oil is the same as the Valvoline other than a die to identify the Valvoline for warranty claims. Other than that the oils/lubricants are the same.

Wix makes the NAPA Gold filters but not the lower series of NAPA filters.

I too have used the NAPA petroleum oils and NAPA Gold filters for the past ~12 years now with great results.
