So..ummm, being a noob and living in Germany...under my maintenance plan I have to purchase the oil and filters and take it to the German Jeep dealership to do the work. How many quarts of oil will I need to bring with me for an oil change?

I have been using WalMart Sythetic for years. Never have had an issue. My last Durango (5.9 V8) had 98K miles on it till someone ran a syop sign and ended her life. She burned no oil got 17MPG and tons of power. My current Durango (4.7 V8) has 82K on it and going strong. The 4.7 is a dog compared to the 5.9. I was not going to use it in my 07 JK but my mechanic budy told me that it would not hurt the engine at all. I buy this stuf in the big 5qt jugs and always have a few on the shelf. Change oil every 5000 miles. The only other oil I use is Rotella Synthetic in my Diesel.

I have never heard of a modern engine (no high pressure/loading valve trains) failure due to use of a name brand oil (conventional or syn) that meets the OEm specifications.

I believe this is the only reason why people say "I've used 'X' and never had any issues". If you use anything, change it when required and use a quality filter, you will be able to say the same.

I think that what is being missed is not just the break down of the oil but the lubricity. When the carbon particles get suspended in the oil a synthetic will provide better protection to your engine from the suspended carbon. Break down is not the only thing to look at. I will use AMSOIL after my engine has broken in. I have heard that the new engines are broken in from the factory but I am skeptical. After 20,000 miles I will change over to AMSOIL.

Also there is no such thing as overkill. Some of us call it insurance, kind of like buying insurance. It might not be needed but it is better to have the protection than not. Just my opinion and experience with VERY VERY VERY large engines.
