what's up with the horn?

I love my new jku rubi crush. It is the coolest thing I have ever owned. Now I don't need to use my horn much. I live in the woods. I use my horn to say hello or goodbye to friends. To my surprise, the jeep horn is by far more wimpy than any I have heard. My first car was a 1982 chevy chevette. It sounded like a Mack truck compared to my jeep. Is my horn deffective?

Get the PIAA duel tone sports horn. There's a couple threads on here about it. You can hear it on YouTube. I was wondering when the 2012'ers would figure out how weak the horn sounds.

Thinking the same thing. On Quadratec I see

PIAA 400Hz/500Hz Low Pitch Sports Horn Kit

PIAA 500Hz/600Hz High Pitch Sports Horn Kit

Is there also a dual tone or grab one of these?

Those are both dual tone. That's why there are two tones listed. Most go with the 400/500. Go to YouTube and listen for yourself.

Is it just the '12's?

I know!! I honked at someone one day and was embarrassed! And I'm a girl. From that day I vowed that I would keep my road rage to myself until I get a new horn.

....it's well established testosterone level goes down with each attempt to 'honk' with the Wrangler stock horn.

I've been searching for something better. That fits.

Electric.

although the 'freight train' and 'coastal freighter' models are considerable improvement I don't have the 2000psi air supply handy

Did I not suggest a replacement?

I don't have any problem with the stock horn other than by the time it finally blows the person it was being blown at has driven several blocks or the light has been through two cycles. I hope I never need it to bring something to someone's attention that needs to know right now. That stupid delay between hitting the button and getting the horn is dumb.

I don't have a problem with it--then again, I'm comparing it to my '91 YJ. The horn in that thing is truly embarrassing.

I like daggo have the PIAA 400/500 horns. I thought the 500/600 sounded a bit "European" for a JK. Listen on you tube. A huge difference. The 7-12's all have the same wimpy single note horn. It's like a Lion who roars and sounds like a kitten. I have no delay in my 10 Rubi. If there's a delay, something is wrong.

It seems almost normal considering the number of complaints there are about it on this forum.

I understand that there are complaints, but there should be no delay. Most JK's are fine. I would take it in and have it taken care of. Since the majority function the way they should, yours should also. It's probably not making proper contact due to a problem that I have no idea what it or where it could be. It's definately not operator error.

I'm pretty sure all JK horns have a slight delay. The horn takes about a quarter of a second from the point where you press the steering wheel to the horn sounding. This is most likely caused by the central computer that operates all of the JKs functions. Compare this to the 2005 Liberty I drove once, which sounded instantly.

Every time someone has a problem with their newer car, it always seems like the computer is to blame.

I wouldn't mind computers... if they worked.

I use a Wolo "Bad Boy." Fits in the stock location. You need to either fab a bracket or use the OE one and bend it mount. Plug and play, but you'll need to change out from a 10 amp fuse to a 20 amp fuse in the fuse box. Big improvement. No delay.

You guys make it sound like something that can be taken care of, but what exactly fixes this delay? (I have it too)
I seriously doubt there is a "Horn timing" setting that the dealership is going to be able to tweak.
It seems like bypassing that system and running an old fashioned one in its place might be the only real fix.

I suspect the comments are correct about the computer delaying the horn on the newer Jeeps. My YJ has an aftermarket steering wheel with horn buttons wired to whatever was stock; probably a relay. The horn was still stock when I bought it - a wimpy little horn mounted on the fenderwelll pointing directly at the inside of the hood. Maybe the oilpan could hear it. I replaced that horn with a relay that came with a pair of Hella horns, and mounted the new horns behind my grille. sounds a bit like a Roadrunner horn, but plenty loud and fits the Jeep character.

It seems like some have a delay and some don't. I know in this post daggo mentioned his 10 doesn't. My 10 doesn't either, not even a fraction of a delay. I don't know what the fix is and I can't even guess. Although, you all have to be right regarding something with the computer.

Talking

I just checked my 11 and there is no delay. Hardly ever use it. It is so loud in my shop it is almost obnoxious! Like the old saying goes, the horn blows, how about the driver!

I suspect that if someone were to dig into this they may find a TSB out there for the horn randomly going off and the solution was a reflash of the computer that gave it a delay to make sure the button was actually pushed before blowing the horn. The reflash at some point became the base program so the later models all do it and the earlier ones only do it if they've had the reflash.

I have never honked my jeeps horn, but now I feel the need to go outside and do it. I guess I better wait until no one is around!
