wheel speed sensor

I've had my Jeep for 3 weeks- 2013 Wrangler Sport- it had 10 miles on it. Two weeks after buying it, the ABS light and the ESC lights come and stay on.
Yesterday, I had the wheel speed sensor replaced. This morning, those damned lights are on and stay on. Again.

My tires are BFG's Mud Terrain KM2's. Same size as was on Jeep and same rims. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Dealership says no.

I went light mudding once. Highway once.
I'm starting to feel like I'm going to have to drive this thing like it's an 87 year old woman.

Has anyone else had the wheel speed sensor as a constant problem? Am I making too big a deal out of it?
I traded in a paid-off 2006 Explorer that had one minor repair in the 7th year of ownership- I'm starting to regret buying this Jeep.

Maybe I just have a dud?

What say you?

My 2010 JKU came factory with a bad door sensor . Went and had it replaced , and guess what? It was bad also. Took it in a 2nd time , replaced again and never had another problem with it. It happens sometimes , try again if that don't work than start getting worried and / or mad . Other than that no problems what so ever .

Thank you. I appreciate your reply. I'll give it another go. I love that damned Jeep.

how far off center is your steering wheel? that might be your problem... might have nothing to do with the sensor.

is your steering wheel straight when you're going straight, or is it off center (e.g. what does the Jeep logo on the wheel look like 10 o'clock position, 2 o'clock position)?

Oh. Duh. Thank you.

The steering wheel is completely straight when I am going straight. But, that is something I will need to re-check when I'm on my way to the dealership today.

yep... if your wheel is off center (i believe more than 5 degrees) the ESP and ABS lights will activate. you might also experience some brake pedal flutter... that's your jeep, thinking you're cornering too fast... and if you're wheel is off, you're not cornering...

just a simple drag link adjustment.

Interesting. Thank you so much for this information.
I like when I can go into these situations with some knowledge. I know the service dept. knows more than I, but maybe they're not considering the steering wheel.

I appreciate your input!

Service dept. says it's another bad wheel speed sensor.

Needless to say, I'm a bit skeptical.

Thank you for the offer.

I told them if it happens again, I'll be requiring a new replacement Jeep. The part has to be ordered, so in a day or two, we'll see. I will certainly update this thread.

Had the second wheel speed sensor replaced yesterday and this morning, the ABS, ESC lights are on, as well as the downhill assist light flashing.
I take her in at 9:45am. This will be the third repair for the same problem. Methinks the Lemon Law applies?

Not until you have had your vehicle in the dealership for more than 30 days for the same issue. Good luck and keep after them.

My Jeep is covered under Florida lemon law in one of two circumstsances: 3 repairs for the same issue. Now, I have to send in a defect information form to the manufacturer to allow a final 4th repair. If that repair fails, the exchange process begins.

I called the Lemon Law hotline this morning.

Was just informed they are replacing all four wheel speed sensors, instead of one at a time.

I have the same problem with my 2013 which barely has 500 miles on it. The lights come on, then go off. Took it to the dealership but the lights were off so they only disconnected the wheel speed sensor and reconnected it. Took it home and that same afternoon the lights came back on. I parked it for dinner and when i drove home they were off.

My wheel speed sensor went bad after the first month/300 miles. Had it replaced and no problems since. Been a year and 7500 miles later.

I picked up my Jeep on Saturday from what was its 3rd repair. I dropped it off at the service dept. on Friday. They decided to keep it overnight, hooked me up with a rental and sent me on my way. The service dept. put 60 miles on her making sure the problem was taken care of. They also put 60 miles on her when I took her in for the SECOND repair.

Saturday morning I picked it up, and the lights were off. They were off all day. I was excited and hopeful that this was the last repair.

Sunday morning I started my Jeep and the damned lights turned on.

The dealership is closed on Sunday, so tomorrow morning, I'll call and take the Jeep in again, but not leave until I can talk to someone higher up about this. I really do not want to go through the hassle of the Lemon Law, but I'm not going to spend 25K on a car that has this problem, minor or not, from the get-go.

The repair on Friday/Saturday was replacing all four wheel speed sensors.

This is really frustrating.

Back at the dealership service dept. today. The ESC and ABS lights were on when I arrived, which was helpful for the mechanics to find the issue. Every other time I brought the Jeep in, the lights were off.

Anyhow, apparently it's a bad ABS wire that is shorting the wheel speed sensors. They don't know which wire, and will most likely be replacing the ABS system.

I'm hopeful that I will not have to go through the Lemon Law process.

I'll keep this thread updated for anyone else experiencing the same.

Dayumm, it's not even my jeep but I hate to hear your going thru this hassle. Everyone deserves to have a smile when driving a Jeep. I got my fingers crossed for you.

This may sound unrelated, but make sure the battery terminals are tight and all the way down the post- i would try reseting them then seeing if you still get the ESP issue. I was having the same problem and found a loose battery connection. No issues after reconnecting it.

Thank you! It's been a frustrating couple of weeks. Hopefully I'll be smiling when driving my Jeep, soon!

I'll take all information given to me in hopes that it may help! Thank you so much for your input.

I am expected to get my Jeep back on Wednesday. I'll update then

Just went through the same thing, with a faulty wire. Fortunately my dealer caught the wire on the first go round. They replaced one sensor, tested the system and found the short. Hope this solves your problem!

Update:

Picked up my Jeep last night. Started it this morning and the ABS and ESC lights weren't on! I'm hoping it stays this way.

The service dept. replaced the ABS harness wiring that was shorting out the wheel speed sensors.

Thank you for all the replies.
