Which Bumper to Mount a Winch?

Let's hear the opinions. '12 JKU-Sport S. Probably with two kids and me and light gear. Stock tires/rims. I'm planning on a Warn 9.5 up front. Does the front bumper matter that much as long as the winch fits and will pull? Oh, yeah, I plan to put some more lights up there. Stubby vs Totally across? Stubby is lighter. Lighter should be good, right?

You can put a winch on a stock bumper. You can also stubby your stock bumper.

Might be able to get away just adding a winch...about 85 lbs or so (–20 lbs if you go w/synthetic), without having to buy stronger springs, etc.

If you add a winch AND an aftermarket steel bumper, you're probably gonna have to address the sag.

Will a winch work on stock front bumper?
Winch on stock JK bumper?
winch on factory bumper?

Stubby Front Bumper
Front Stubby Bumper

Thanks, for that. Dealer said could not put winch on the Sport S bumper. Figures.

Maybe he's right, but I don't think so. I haven't kept track of the peeps who've mounted winches to their stock bumpers w/an aftermarket plate, but I'm pretty sure I'd have heard about it if it didn't work on a specific Wrangler model.

One thing you'll most likely have to do (if you decide to go that route) is relocate your vacuum pump, which is located on a bracket behind your front bumper on the '12. Pretty simple to do...I think the replacement bracket I bought was ~ $50 from Jason @ Krawl Off-Road (forum vendor).

Look through those links I sent you about mounting winches to stock bumpers. The more I think about it, the more I think your dealer is mistaken. Why would the Sport S bumper be different from the other Wranglers? Makes no sense.

Ima go out on a limb here: dealer's wrong!

Earlier this week I added a rugged ridge XHD bumer (w/ sunken winch mount), its a modular system, so can change the look up a bit. I would look through the reviews, I choose rugged ridge since the D-rings bolt right o the frame for support when pulling. I saw others that looked similar but read a few (very few) reviews where they had issues when winching (specifically the smittybuilt front modular bumper)

<---btw, thats the bumper on my profile pic (and the rugged ridge will support Warn winches)

Thinking the same front/rear bumpers with a winch, will i really have to upgrade suspension due to added weight? Hoping to avoid it...
