Which looks better? Bigger AT or Smaller MT?

Which do you think would look better on a lifted JKU; 315 ATs or 285 MTs?

I'm asking about looks, not function. Wondering if the more aggressive look of the MT makes up for the smaller size.

An aggressive at looks good in my opinion and always looks better in person than in photos. I think anyone who has seen these in person would agree. Look mild in photos but in person look better

you live in Oregon so you have les schwabb tire shops. they will mount one of each for you.

Indeed. So will Discount Tire. I got a quote from Les Schwabb on two different tires. Both times they were crazy expensive! Some day I may give them another chance but at this point they're off my list.

Choose tires for what you need them to DO. If you need an AT, mostly street rig, get an AT. If you need a MT for a lot of Offroad, get a MT.

And you're sort of doing it backwards - pick a tire size then pick a lift that will clear the tires.
Well, I've only told you part of the story. My Jeep is already done; 2.5" lift installed, 285 mild AT tires installed. Ready to run. After looking at it for a year I find the 285 tires look just a bit small. I'm sort of thinking that a more aggressive tread may change the look enough to help restore balance to the force.

I do NOT want to go up in size and I will not do a tire change just for appearance purposes, since I am a form-follows-function sort of guy. But as I think about a more aggressive tread for functional reasons, I recognize that it may pay some visual benefits?

Or maybe not?

Hence the poll.

The many new "rugged" A/T's are winning out big time at the cash register...

AT/3 is barely an A/T... Not for me. KO2's are a little less aggressive looking than some, but still pretty good. S/T Maxx, Ridge Grappler and Toyo RT are A/T's that look like they belong on a Jeep. And frankly, they'll take you anywhere that an M/T will except maybe the deep mud the M/T designed for.

STT Pro and DC Extreme Terrain are M/T's that have pulled back a little for better road manners. They are fantastic tires too.

Crawler tires are a different story...

Take a look at these then.
Technically an AT but quite aggressive. Last long. Do well in mud.
Not as good on street as the ST-Maxx but are usually a bargain.
The Cooper Discoverer S/T, 285/75-16 (33" ish) on my Jeep with a 2.5" lift.

I think they look a bit meaner than they are.

Thanks.
A hard shell, a comfy bed, a stocked kitchen. Always ready to go.
What more could you want?

Tires/wheels match the Jeep too. Just in case...

So many tires to choose from these days. Back when I wheeled in my teens these were your options

Yup, I remember that too.
Mudders, and Ground Hawgs if I remember right.
I can't remember the original producer, Denman, or Interco comes to mind.

Here's a set of Cooper ST MAXX 315/70-17's on my JK w/AEV 2.5" kit.
They are not too loud on the road if that concerns you, they work great in our usually snowy upper NY state winters, and for the type of off raoding we have around here work very well.
they've been on for 13K miles or so, and seem to be wearing quite well.

Same tires on our JKUWW, on stock Willys wheels with 1.5" spacers and AEV 2.5" kit

And on my sons '16 JKUWW with AEV 2.5" kit on Level 8 Bully Pro's.
I'll give you a few different shots of the JKU as that's what you were interested in. Hope these give you an idea of how they fit.
