Which new Uunlimited to buy?

My name is Sam. I have never owned a Wrangler. After doing some research on Jeep's site, I am more familiar with the trims, but I still need some help choosing the right model for my needs.

Firstly, I have three kids. This ride will be my daily driver. My wife has a Honda Oddyssey that usually hauls the kids around. But my jeep needs to be able to fit two boosters and a car seat. I currently have a 2008 Sierra Z71. I will be selling it and using the equity to put own on a new Jeep. My kids are 7,6,and 2. All boys. They will love the Jeep too right!?

As fun as it would be, my daily driver will never be used for trails, mud, or rock crawls. I will on occasion tow a 24' pontoon. I also want to put bigger tires on it, likely 275/70r18 (about 33" tall) or 275/75r18 (about 34" tall).

Here are my thoughts. Get a Sport with the max tow package, 3:73 gears and 6 speed manual tranny. I don't need the offroad capability of a rubicon or the bells and whistles on the MOAB.

Most importantly I need towing capability for the pontoon. And the ability to lift it if necessary to hold the taller tires. Available gears on the 2013 model are 3:21,3:73,and 4:10. They all have the same 275hp engine. I appreciate any advice you can offer.

I wouldn't call the Jeep a great tow vehicle - but, hard to fault your logic with respect to trim and options.

Welcome to WF!

4.10's are only available on the Rubicon.

So it looks like a Sport S with 3.73's has your name on it.

285hp. how much does your pontoon weigh? two boosters and a car seat are going to be tight.

I am fairly new around here and waiting on my unlimited as well bit will chime in as towing is a priority for me as well. I am coming from a diesel super duty and know that its going to be a different experience, even though I'm towing nothing like your talking about. I have towed with an unlimited before I decided on it. While I believe the 3500lb is way understated, I have towed pontoons and to be honest I don't think I'd be real comfortable doing it with a jeep. Obviously you know the weight, travel distance, ramp Ect. I am just being honest and it's more about the "sail" design of that thing on he trailer than the weight.
I got rid of my truck and am getting a jeep cause I was able to downsize campers and boats and stuff like that.
All that being said I ordered mine with AT, max tow, 3:73 limited slip. They come with tranny coolers stock.

I sold a truck (Tacoma 4x4 TRD OR) and got my current Jeep. I had one before (modded XJ). If I had little kids and a boat, I'd be keeping my truck. Heck, you could buy a used Jeep, build it out, tow it to the trail head with that Chevy, throw the boys in there, break stuff, then drag the Jeep back to the garage! I guess I'm just coservative on towing. I can't imagine the highway with a barn door (JKU) towing a barn door (pontoon boat). But as longs as you're within the weight and have an EBC wired in, it may be fine.

I think the 4.10s are an Option on the Sahara package. You may want to check into that. Boats are not light, I would think you want the biggest gear possible to help with that.

Also, I have two kids(2.5 and 0.5)years old. Fitting two boosters and a carseat in the back may be tight, I'd make the car salesmen let me install all the seats BEFORE I bought the Jeep to make sure they fit properly. They will probably fit if they are all reasonably narrow seats, but wide seats you can forget about going 3 deep.

I am a first time JKU owner with similar needs. I picked up my MOAB a couple of weeks ago and its working out great for me. I have 3 kids also. One of which is still in a booster. But no issues, they all fit back there quite comfortably. I probably won’t be hitting the trails either, but it’s great knowing that I have a great year around vehicle (that is my DD) that can do it all. 10” inches of snow? …..no problem. Beautiful day to go topless? ..… no problem with most of the creature comforts of my previous car, heated seats, auto air, nav, bluetooth.
I have no experience doing any towing....yet so I can't comment.

I have found that my booster seats take up about 110% of the allotted space in the middle spot. I think it will be very tight to get the car seats and the booster in.

I think two seats is the practical limit in the rear seat. I could only get an infant seat to fit rear facing. Thank god my kid is one now and can sit front facing. Most seats rear facing meant the front passenger would need to be a double amputee to sit there.

I think the towing is going to be a problem. Probably don't want to tow anything more than a 1000 lbs and a pontoon boat is pretty long. Not to say the Jeep "cant" do it but its not safe.
