Which oil to use when not knowing what was in it prior.

My 1 month old 08 .
I have put like 500 miles on it. But for some reason trusted* the used car dealer ship to service the vehicle. Lol. Any ways I see the oil is low call the dealer and of course have no record of the oil used, claimed they had it less than 2 weeks blah blah blah. My question is with out knowing what oil is in there what oil can I or should I use. 32000 on the jeep.

It calls for 5w 20. Put that in now and change the oil first chance you get.

All certified SAE motor oils are compatible with each other, so just change it and put in the oil you know to be correct. No need to fret.

Use whatever oil you plan to keep using. I like Valvoline myself.

*FYI - keep an eye on your oil level, especially if you're low right now. First generation JKs (more specifically 07 - 09) have a well documented history of consuming oil. Not all rigs in those model years, but some, and mine's one of them (07 Sahara).

Several rigs whose blocks were assembled in Mexico had the piston rings inserted upside down which is what causes the issue. Mine uses roughly a quart per 1,000 miles - which according to Jeep is within acceptable range. We all know thats BS, but that's what they say.
I switched up to a heavier weight synthetic oil (5w30 opposed to 5w20) which seems to have helped some.

Just wanted to let you know to avoid any
potential problems. Your rig may be fine, but I found out about this the hard way when my oil light illuminated and I came to find my rig 3 quarts low, much to my surprise.

Don't get me wrong - still love my Jeep!

agree with bigdog, but also, you can use synthetic or dino. my 08 sahara, used very little oil, when i drove it, daughter stole it and took it to college, she tells me the oil level is always fine. we change every, 5000 miles using mobil one.
