I bought an '11 in August because of the financing deal. Super happy, but sure would like the extra horses though! One complaint about the '12: What's up with that engine shroud? Too much plastic under the hood!

I've already removed that. I like to see the engine.

I bought a 2012 jk sport because I'm a college student (graduating in may) and it's what was most financially responsible. if you can swing a rubi, I'd get that. I plan on at least keeping my sport until it's paid off. good luck with the decision.

From what I can tell a sport will allow you to have more reason to mod later?

Dealers here are trying to give 2011's away. I went with the 2012. Do you need a Rubi? They are more capable, but heavier, more expensive, and eat A LOT MORE GAS! The 11 Rubi will eat even more gas!

At the end of the day, you get very little back at resale for mods. So you could supercharge the '11 or rubi-fy the '12 - you're not getting much back either way.

Me, I'd get the '12. Day in, day out, the extra power is really nice. If you get an 11 rubi and supercharge it, I think it would be hard to win a warranty claim if you had an engine/trans problem. If you get a 12 sport and add lockers and have an engine/trans problem, I think you'd probably be ok on the warranty claim.

On the other hand, if you don't need the power, you might get everything you need with the '11 Rubi but always wish you'd gotten the lockers if you get the '12 sport.

Hmm. I guess that probably doesn't really help.

The Rubicon wont eat much if any more gas then the sport or sahara.. It's definently not a big difference..

It's the rolling resistance of the tires more than the added weight. Put Rubi tires on a sport and very little diff in mpg vs. a Rubi.

No offense, I read 18 pages of gas mileage thread here on the Forum before I bought my 2012. Pretty much all of the Rubi owners were getting 13-15mpg. More overall weight, bigger heavier tires, rolling resistance, different gearing, less efficient engine in the 2011, all contribute. I'm getting 19mpg in town and 24 on the hwy in my Sport. That's almost a 50% increase!!

I traded an '11 I had for 10 months for a '12.

Previously owned an '07 which did not have as huge a throttle response issue as the '11, and there is no programmer to correct it on the '11...

2012 all the way.

Interior in 11 puts 07-10 to shame, but the '12 finally gets the drive train right.

(all JKUS, but if you can't even get the throttle response right, what is the point having a Rubicon?)

If you can afford te 12 rubi get it if not I would go with the 11 rubi regardless off engine. that would be me. It also depends on what your going to do with it. If its going to be a mall crawler you dont really need a rubi and you could go with the 12 sport just for the engine. I drove a 12 rubi yesterday nice jeep, I went 11 sport because I knew every thing would be changed eventually axles, suspension, wheels, tires and yes engine. there all out of a minivan any way. diesel power thats where I'm heading.

This is exactly what I did. I drove the 2012 and really liked the power it had but I wanted a Rubicon. I found this 2011 JKU Rubicon with the new interior and the wife and I both fell in love with it.

After modding it out I am still happy with it. My brother-in-law purchased the 2012 Unlimited Sport and is really happy with it. I have driven both after installing the BB on his 2012 and 35" tires and my 2011 with 4" lift, 35" tires and a re-gear and I am overall still happy with my decision, the re-gear helped tremendously.

I am trying to talk him into re-gearing his but he doesn't want to spend the money right now.

I am into mine with ALL of the mods about the same as he is in his 2012 with just a BB and 35" tires.

I would love to have a 2012 with all of the modifications done to it that I have on my 2011 but unfortunately money was a deciding factor and I didn't want to have a payment.

If money wasn't the main issue or payment then I would probably go for the 2012 vs. the 2011 for merely the extra ponies.

Mike.

It's just like owning Arabian horses--you modify/train to your satisfaction, then if you're unhappy--buy a newone-

I'm still leary of that "JESUS" engine wit twice the number of moving parts, no headers, Now the auto tranny is really something, but

Nothings enough for me to change-

Good luck

Totally agree with you choice to re-gear the 2011 - that was my determination on what the 2011 needed as well.
(really, the 3.8 has enough power, it is hamstrung by the throttle control, poor shift points and isn't allowed to get into its best RPM range due to gears).

For me, the price to re-gear or move to a 2012 was about the same, so I took the route with the warranty.

I know that in my 12 Rubi JKU I can squeal the tires when I pop it into 2nd gear! And thats a dry perk! Not a 2.4L 4cyl on wet pavement. LOLOL

I've changed to GY 33" MTRs, solid steel bumper/winch and tire carrier, rockrails. I'm driving a stick and living in the mountains climbing up and down I get 17+ mpg. Thats a 12 JKU Rubi btw.

Sweet! Proves our point about the 2012! Your 17mpg on a Rubi is 2-4mpg over the 2011 which is a 12-25% increase over the 2011s at 13-15.

And isn't that engine sweet when you run a 1/4 and can squawk the tires shifting into 2nd? I love the stick.

Surely it wasn't getting 17mpg as the reason for sidelining any pre '12 jeep, wasit-?

My '08 JKUR /5200 lbs will avg over 17 mpg on the freeway--when I driveit on the freeway--so

What else wasit, it couldn't be lighting up the tires--my 1949 ford coupe-231 cu-in flathead did that-so what wasit ??

Will wonders never cease !

Pick the cheep 1 with lowest mileage and best color. No casting sand, and no ticking. And no leaks. And one that doesnt pop out of gear or make obsurd noises in gear. Lol.
