Who here with a 4.5 lift or above has replaced there drive shafts?

How many people actually do this?

I have had a 4.5in lift on my JK since 2008 and my drive shafts are fine with no damage to the rubber boots at all so far......

Although the Tom Woods look super nice and strong...

The increased angle that your axles need to spin on will wear out your U-Joints much faster than normal, the longer shafts from Tom Woods and other vendors return the angle of operation to something more "nominal." If you don't care about that just check your shafts for play every so often so they don't break while you are driving. The U-Joints are the weak point not the shaft itself.

The CV joint is weak point in the stock shafts. Also the stock shafts are long enough as the stock and aftermarket shafts slide up and down on the slip joint as needed.

I think the OP was wondering who actually blew out their stock shaft as he is surprised that his CV joint hasnít blown out yet. I am too.

To the OP - do you wheel it much?

Changed both when I put on the lift, my jk had 149 miles on it, now 38,000. No problems

I go on trials and what not but I do not do any extreme off roading.

My drive shafts look just like the day I lifted it, nothing wearing out or loose.
The front drive shaft has a bit more of an angle but the rear looks just like it did before I lifted it.

Wow, that's surprising. You don't have any grease spitting out of the CV joint boots?

I changed both of mine the day I lifted. But if your doing fine leave them keep an eye on them.

Yeah, donít see any grease on the two upper pics - they look great. Do you have a pic of the upper joint in the front? It sure looks like your angle is straight on. I think even the stock angle looks worse that that.

Do you have a pic of the upper joint in the front?
Thats the one that has an angle, but even stock it had an angle. Ill try to post a pic soon.

This is why i started this post, i have a 4.5in lift with 35s and like you also said, they look fine to me so far and its been since 2008.

It looks like my rear shaft (even stock) has more of an angle than yours.


Your kit must have included new arms so you could adjust the angles properly.

I figured it would be hard to adjust the angle on the front too.

It sure looks like your setup works well with the stock shafts!

Joes got a 2 door and the OP has.a.4 door. 4 door angles are.much. more forgiving

I didnt want to wory about drive shafts so I upgraded a bit. Tom Woods 1350's FTW. These things are super stout.

What's with your driveshaft angle? Doesnt make any sense at all. Mine with 3" Teraflex lift is much sharper than that. Plus I had to lift my pinion angle a bit. I have a JKUR. Thats what mine looked like when it was stock. What lift do you have? Body lift? Is that your 4.5" lift in your profile pic.?

Changed mine the when I built my axles. I only drove about a thousand miles on the Jeep after lifting it and stock driveshafts but it never left the pavement during that time so no flexing.

I went with the Tom Woods driveshafts and have been very pleased.

i don't know how to respond to this. either you don't know what you're talking about or your just totally incorrect. a stock jkur will have a very slight angle on the ds. and they are much more forgiving.

My front driveshaft was fine in normal driving conditions,after disconnecting & hitting trails I found it was hitting the Transmission so changed it to a Coast DS, no problems now & that was months ago. Mines an '07

Referring to the ops pics of his drive angle after a 4.5" lift. What dont you understand. I said nothing to what you are referring too. No way thats a 4.5 lift, unless half of it is body. Like i said. My ds angle looked like his when my jkur was stock. Now that its lifted its sharper than that and i only have a 3" coil lift. Get it now?

my apologies chim-chim7, I thought you we're calling me out on my pictures. my fault.

i agree with you 100% on the OP's pics. for a 4" lift, that angle is stock looking, if not better than stock.

Shoot, no worries. Guess I should have put "to the op" in my title.I see how that can be confusing. Still waiting to hear back from op about lift. Heck his rear pinion angle isnt even adjusted. In the front he has what looks like a BDS shock or maybe skyjacker, hard to tell.

hmmmmm this has me wandering now I have a 4" lift and my DS is kinda ok a small amount of grease is coming out but where the bolts attach it the boot is fine???

ok problem solved 8mm socket and all bolts were loose but now good glad I caught that soon.
