Why did they do this?

This is a pic of the pipe coming off the drivers side exhaust manifold. What would be the purpose for it to be this way? (2012)

It has to do with the performance of the new engine. I forget were I read it but it is one of the reasons the new engine can put out so much more horse power belive it or not.

So that the exhaust piping is the same overall length on both sides, tail pipe on right so right pipe would be shorter without the loop-de-loop on the drivers side pipe

Spot on what the money pit said.

Pretty damm good design that actually. I haven't seen welding like that since my arrow rgv250 pipes back in the *cough* 90's.

I'd guess for back pressure.

Head pipe length must be equal for performance reasons. It's a good exhaust design.

From an engineering standpoint it makes sense. Performance exhaust headers have always used equal length head pipes, some looked pretty weird. That being said....It's a PIA. It makes the drivers side of the cabin hot. I can feel it even with the top down. I turn the blower on high and direct air to the floor just to get rid of the heat. It's a little worrisome. Im sure that rocks dont care, but things like tall grass and brush would be adversely affected by contact with that thing. As would my Jeep if the brush and grass decide to burn! I dont like it. I hope they come up with a different design for the 2014, when Ill be in the market for a Rubicon.

Hopefully they factored in the bends, each bends equals about two times straight pipe length, ex: 1 blend may equal 12" even though it only took 7 inches of pipe. Has to do with friction/pressures
