Why the 2012 leaks under the passenger floormat

I have read through some posts and some of the threads are like 700 posts and I was not about to waste the time thumbing through them.. Most of the posts are "your ac is plugged" or the dealer put this seal on the door etc etc.. So instead of me taking it to the dealer to get the bs run around, I decided to look on my brand new 2 week old wrangler myself.. this is what I found..

While having my GF spray it with the hose..I jumped inside..

Pulled the carpet back..

This is not very comfy..

Leaks right out of the green plug that meets the firewall and side of the body..upper center left of picture, this is located on the passanger side behind the dash..

This is a youtube video I made of it with just a light spray of the hose..

Jeep wrangler 2012 leak - YouTube

Our 2012 JKU leaks too.. Now when I take it to the dealer they can just fix it instead of putting a bandaid on it!

Thats the right way to do it, make a video, and you have proof. Wont have to listen to the dealer bs. I would like to know what they do to fix it, send us a update please.

So that's why mine leaked during that heavy rain I was driving in.

I thought one of my drain plugs came out but I checked. You're right buddy, some of these leak just like you say, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Mine does the same thing.

Hmmm.... I wonder if some simple silicone would get it done? I get the occasional leak on my 2011 in the passenger footwell, but it is inconsistent.

The best fix, and to avoid the dealer screwing our vehicles up just a little bit more, you should find out where that area is (meets) on the OUTSIDE of the Jeep, and silicone it from the outside. If you do it from the inside, you would still have water trapped in between the sheetmetal. Would love to have a fix for this from the outside to seal the Jeep up.

I have WeatherTech fitted floor mats on my JKR. The only time I've seen any leak was when we had a side ways rain, and a tiny bit of water ran under the driver side door and onto the floor mat. Looked like a small gap in the gasket. Will try to get it to fit a little better before running through too much water.

I really like the effort by Sicbrian in documenting his issue.

Again, big thanks for finding it, now we all must band together and find the ENTRY hole from the outside. Sealing from the inside is not the right solution.

Wow, my leaks but on the driver's side. GREAT FIND!! Subscribed, hope to find a way to fix it myself

BTW, after the first leak, i ripped out the carpet. Probably the best thing I've done to my jeep so far . . .

Does anyone have a picture of the passenger side of the jeep with no side skin on it? I looked up from the bottom up and I can only see where the antenna is.. Im wondering if the area where the plug is, on the outside just drains straight down as I can see its all open..

I had the same leak, it stopped when I installed the mopar door sills. It traveled down the door front against the weather strip and behind the plastic wire guard to the floor, the sill plate slopes away from the cabin and tightens the seal, alleviating the leak

Did you see the video? This leak is way away from the door seal...

Nah.... It's up near the firewall, I pulled on the plug thing last night, it is pretty much just sitting right on the top of the metal... I'm going to inject water into it tonight to see if it drains to the outside of the vehicle (like part of the channel that drains from the vent in between the hood and windshield) then I believe it would be possible to seal it from the inside of the cabin.. I don't know how jeep missed something so simple..

Ok I couldn't handle it, as soon as I got home from work I had to see where the other side of the "plug" drained to.. this is what I found..

Started off with a turkey injector with some fuel tubing from one of my model airplanes..

Grabbed a "Red Solo Cup" and filled it up, (with water)

Then inserted it into the "plug"

The water leaked out of here..

Here is the youtube video of it leaking...

2012 jeep wrangler leak - YouTube

So I figured I would inject more water to see if it leaked out the same place, and it did...

So my conclusion, you should be able to pull the plug out to the side and RTV it to seal it up without negative effects..

I'm actually due to check the carpet on our '10 again. Will just get up there and seal that thing when I'm in there. Thanks for the detective work!!

Dealer did the TSB fix on 2012 JKU Hardtop yesterday and it still leaks on passenger side. They are checking with Chrysler for a fix now. Great pics and video I am going to check that plug right now.

Slcbrian,

Thanks for going through all the trouble to document this problem!

I bought a new two door 2011 Jeep Wrangler last year that had this leak problem on the passenger side and the dealership tried 5 times to fix it but never did. I ended up working out a deal with them to trade it for a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. A few days after I had the 2012 we had a heavy rain and there was no leak. So I thought this issue was over. However, two days ago we had a relatively light rain and there was the water on my Weathertech passenger side floor mat. I'm so glad I found your fix because I don't want to go through the hassle of taking this Jeep back to the dealer.

My question is have you had any problems since you sealed the leaking plug?

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks. I just tried to look at the plug to see how difficult it will be to seal the plug and you have to be a contortionist to be able to work under there! Did you just use some clear silicone caulk?

I used black RTV, I pryed the plug out a bit and filled in as much as I could, then I went all around the whole thing with it..

Thanks for your effort to fix this. You sealed it up from the inside, correct?
