Your correct about the money. Not trying to dispute what you say. But think about this. If your stuck in the middle of no where or stuck at 11,000 feet on the side of a mountain your counting on that winch to get you out of trouble.
If your in that situation you'll be glad you spent a couple extra hundred bucks. Get a WARN! Get a cover for it. Take care of it! And when you need it...It will take care of YOU!

I went through the same decision process a short while ago: came close to pulling the trigger on an ENGO, but ended up with this one instead:

Superwinch Talon 9.5i for $669 delivered, and the industry's best warranty: an impressive 3 years on electrical components, and limited lifetime on everything else. The Talon's fit and finish are excellent, and it looks great inside my E1 bumper.

Good luck with your decision!

I was out playing this weekend and took an old fire road. The road was pretty washed out. Another jeep and a toyota followed me. It got pretty steep and I wound up pulling the jeep once (no lockers). He then headed for the top and walked back down to help. I pulled the toy also but he had problems because he was carburated. So I turned around, ran the cable under my jeep to the tow rope and pulled him the rest of the way up the ridge.

The winch Warn 9500HS I had this winch origanlly on my Ford F350
I have had this winch for over 12 years with nooooo problems.

Warn is a fantastic product and is super reliable no question. But I personally and never had any problems with my engo or my warn and have had both for 6+ years I have also had a 20000LB winch the I got at harbor freight for 5 years and also never had a problem. So this debate comes down to personal preference. I would love to both a warn zeon because it looks awesome and is a great machine but if I can get another machine with the same warranty coverage for half as much well for me that is a no brainer. At that point I could Mount on on the front and on on the back for the same price. Problem solved

So after a long time of going through different winches I jumped in and purchased mine today. It will be shipping around Wednesday next week. If you have any questions about the winch ask away. This is the winch I purchased.
Spoke with one of the owners of Engo for a while, how can you beat a life time warranty on ALL parts.

Blue,
Not putting down your choice, but be aware that none of the winch manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty on everything. Engo offers a limited lifetime on mechanical components and one year on electrical components. Warn offers two years on electrical and Superwinch offers three years on their Talon series.

I got an engo, haven't had a chance to use it, but I do have Warn envy right now they look really good and everyone swears by them that owns them. But at twice the price and not as good a performer in the winch shootout, I went with engo and will be happy.

I went back and read the winch shootout performed by 4wheeler, and it was the Warn 9.5 that came out on top, no?

Did you read the text? The warn did not even finish all the tests. It burned up on I think it was a dead weight pull. I assume it was sponsored by warn.

Winch Max Pull (lb) Result
Bulldog 10,000 Broke internal parts, would not work after test
Engo 12,000 All functions still worked after test
Superwinch 15,900 Would not spool out after test
T-Max 16,000 All functions still worked after test
Warn 16,000 Broke internal parts, would not work after test

I wonder why they pulled some winches at higher than others, 12k on engo but 16k on warn? It appears Warn did come 1st from an overall standpoint. I also don't have my vehicle yet but leaning toward the Warn. need my winch to pull me closer to that mall parking spot lol

Actually the engo has a thermal cutoff that tirns it off before breaking. Warn doesn't care, if you can afford a 1k winch initially, you can afford to replace it when it breaks.

Being an engineer, I consider not shutting a device down before breaking as a sign of a poor design.

Lets assume you have a winch rated to pull 1.5x the weight of your vehicle, as is recommended. You should NEVER work a winch that hard!! After 5-10 seconds max, if your winch is still not moving your vehicle, you should stop, slowly and carefully consider the situation and try a different approach/angle. If you keep pulling to the point of thermal cutoff or winch breakage, you are as likely to break whatever components of your vehicle that might be hung up (control arms, cross over, brackets, etc) as you are to break the winch itself.

Now, that said, I would like it if Warn had the cutoff feature for peace of mind!

A number of the Warn winches do incorporate some form of thermal protection.

The 9.5 ct series has an indicator light. The Endurance 12 includes a fan for the motor. The Powerplant models include a thermal switch.

ah, this makes sense, didn't take into account a thermal switch. Thankfully Mike and I live in alaska!

Mike, did you get steel line? did you consider synthetic? I am leaning toward steel for the weather up here.

If you have $600 a WARN VR-8000 will be the best winch purchase you make. It's Warn the best brand in winches. You could Superwinch LP-8500 both are American made

I have steel as that's all they offer the Tiger Shark with. I'm debating switching over to the Technora synthetic from Jeepswag.com as it doesn't have the heat challenges that Amsteel/Dyneema does.

But the steel cable can easily last 20-30 years if it's properly maintained.

RECON 10,500 lb with synthetic line. Best winch under $500 out there. Truckandwinch.com

No need to spend a bunch of money for a brand name.

Well, so much for the $600 budget!
But, definitely the right choice!
