On a regular bumper (not COD or Moab or 10A etc) you need to use a winch plate of some type. Yesterday I mounted a Warn VR10000 using a Rock Hard 4X4 plate and it was easy as could be.

I've wondered if the mounting holes (4 in a square) are standardized for winches?

I have the smittybilt src bumper, so Im guess that's universal?

Harbor freight has a universal pate mount. I went this route also. Came out pretty solid and very clean looking. Just got to take your time with making cuts. I used a grinder for all mine. Metal and plastic... I'll try to get the pics up shortly of the end product. I'll post the steps on my build thread as soon as I upload all the pics

maximus-3 has a nice set up with or without hoop and light bracket - no cutting or drilling required.

I have a warn plate. I set this up as a temp thing until a get a bumper, but it grew on me so fast that a front bumper is last in my list now.

When I made my Stubby I thought I would have it on just until I got a better front bumper but when I traded my old wrangler I pulled it off and it is now on my new one can not see getting a different one as this one is light weight looks ok and now with the winch plate and winch I see no valid reason to get anything different. I actually like that it has the crush cans so the air bags don't deploy on a minor front end mishap.

About 4 hours to install. Used harbor freight universal winch plate and did some minor cutting and trimming so the plate sits below factory bumper. I think it's a cleaner look than just sitting the plate on top of the plastic.

Do you have pics showing what you cut? Or can you take a few as it sits to show what is needed to make it work? Thanks!

I like mine inside the bumper, but it was quite a job getting it mounted in there. I actually can't find any aftermarket bumper I like that the winch mounts inside so I stick with the stock!!

A little better picture of the hidden winch, but on mine

Black bumper was just dirty in this picture. These were my pictures as I was building, I cleaned it up afterwards.

Second this. A few close up shots around the perimeter of the winch, showeing the cuts, would be great.
