My smittybilt plate and winch is all kinds of beast There is no flex in the plate and I've anchored the back tow hooks to a tree and skidded some big ass logs...SOLID.

I know this thread is a couple of months old, but I've been searching for a great mid to long term mounting solution for my 9K winch, something that allows me to make other mods before finding the exact bumper that I'm looking for.

A question for those that have mounted the Rough Country winch plate, how bad is the sag (if any) when mounted on the stock bumper, with stock suspension? My winch, the Engo 9000, says it weighs in with steel cable, at 85 pounds (shipping weight).

Jay, I've got the MileMarker PEC8 that is listed at 81 lbs. I have not noticed any sag at all, but to be sure I just went out and measured. The jeep is sitting in a bit of a divot, so the r/h and l/h heights are a bit different. The left side measured a bit over 30 inches to the bottom of the front edge of the fender (easier to measure than the bumper). The right side was about 5/8ths lower. I've had the RC mount going on two years now and am still happy with it. Have notice some spots could use some touch up paint. Hope that helps.

While you were shopping you probably noticed pretty much two price groupings. The lower price was for the plate without the D Ring mounting brackets and the higher price was for the plate with the D Ring mounting brackets and supplied D Rings (trash). I got the one with the D Ring mounting brackets. You can now buy them as an option if you didn't get them with the winch plate.

The picture below shows the winch plate with the hook of the winch line hooked into the bushing that the D rings go on. I do not keep the D Rings on the bushings because they are too easy to just walk off with. I store them in my recovery kit along with all of my other winch stuff. If you follow the link to my thread, there is a link there that shows where I got the winch plate and what was included in it.

Sorry for being a bit dense, but Chris at truckaddons.com told me to get part #1162 (which is without the D-rings). Candidly, I didn't know what the D-rings were for so I didn't question him as he seemed to be the expert (putting aside for a moment that he ordered the wrong winch plate for me the first time). I trusted him to to guide me and now I'm concerned that he has made yet another mistake. I didn't realize that by installing this winch plate, I would no longer be able to tow from the front unless I had the D-rings.

I think what you're saying is that part #1173 [w/D-Rings] has D-rings that are crap and so now I need to go buy them and the D-ring mounts separately somewhere else and install them myself? If so, could you provide a link please to which ones I should buy (both the D-ring mounts and the D-rings)? I had an installer put this whole thing together and, because of Chris's/truckaddons.com's mistakes, it cost me $200 more in installation costs (although the installer was nice enough to help me out and only charge me $100). So I'm hoping I can just install these separately purchased D-rings and D-ring mounts myself (I am so over my budget already on this winch).

I would call Rough Country and see if you can buy just the D ring mounting plates. They just bolt on over the winch plate. I would think they could help you out on that.

Agree on the D rings. Get a good set elsewhere. I got some from amazon. Black, because it is all about looking good!

I just chatted with Rough Country on line. The cost for just the D Rings and mounts without the winch plate is 89.95. You will have to call them to order this because there is no link on their web site. Since the bulk of the install has been done for you, the bolting on of the mounting for the D Rings is a minor install detail requiring a couple of wrenches.

With the kit you will receive a set of D Rings. They are garbage as they would not fit on the bushings that are part of the mount plates. They are made in china and look like they were made in china. HOWEVER, they are supplied as a kit so, say thank you and go out and get some good ones. If you followed the link to my winch plate install thread, you will see that I got a separate recovery kit. That kit contained a pair of D Rings that were acceptable for the purpose. I put the chinese made D Rings in the kit along with the good ones because, in my book, you can never have too many D Rings. You may not use them on the bumper but they will prove useful for some other purpose. For instance: I rescued my neighbor's enormous fork truck when he went off roading with it in his back yard and used it on the pintle pin on the back of his fork truck to pull him out along with the snatch block in the recovery kit. So, yah, if the D Rings don't fit....don't fret. Just get a good recovery kit that has them.

Interested to get some feedback from folks that added a winch to the OEM Bumper on a stock JK. Did you notice any issue with sagging in the front and any change in handling?

I am looking to add a winch, mount plate & lights to the OEM bumper, around 100-105lbs but would love to hear any feedback, good or bad. Everything I read in other forums are from folks that also swapped the entire bumper and looks like 165-200lbs worth of weight. My application is about half that high number and interested to hear from folks that have already done theirs.

I've not noticed any change in handling nor any sag on my 2010 Sport.

Make sure your kit either has tow hooks or preserves the factory hooks. Mine didn't so I had to add them later. This required pulling the mounting plate and drilling through the thick metal. My hooks are from tractor supply co. You can see an example on the first page of this thread.

The forces on the plate are enormous when the winch is in use. While pulling a Bronco 2 up a sand dune, my plate flexed and the suspension bottomed. Make sure you bolt this on tight with quality grade 8 hardware.

Thanks for the info Dave. I use my factory tow hooks extensively, logging with my Jeep in 4-lo using heavy straps. I am looking to add a winch more for the logging aspect vs vehicle recovery. My interest would be to do a mount that retains the factory hooks, they have been excellent.

I think a lot about the forces on the suspension and for pulls that are on an incline my intent is to keep a heavy bottle jack w/ me to support under the frame so I dont place undo stress.

smittybilt winch plate, and i kept my factory tow hooks. i use them all the time. don't need to use the winch all the time. sometimes the tow hooks and a strap are a better application.

I wouldn't use the bottle jack. I don't think it will stay in place. I'd just let the suspension settle down on the bump stops.

yep... couldn't agree more. placing a jack under your rig when you're winching could be disastrous... good catch safety!

Anyone know anything about this winch plate? Made in the USA and it retains the factory hooks. I haven't been able to find any installs, reviews or additional pictures. i can't say i've heard anything about the winch plate you referenced. here's the winch plate i used... cheaper than the one you're looking at. no complaints so far, and retained the factory hooks on the stock bumper.

Sorry for digging up an old thread but did anyone install the smittybilt winch plate on a '12 or newer JK?

According to the Rough Country site thier plate requires you to purchase the brake pump relocation braket on the 12s. I like the smittybilt plate better but it says its for the 07-11, am I correct in assuming its because of the brake pump being in the way on the 12s? Will the smittybilt plate work on a 12 if I buy the brake pump relocation braket from rough country?
