Winch on stock bumper?

Im wondering if you can mount a winch on the stock JK bumper or would i have to buy an aftermarket steel one? If i can mount one, what would be the best in the 8,000-10,000 lbs range?

Yeah you can, I bought mine with a winch mounted on the stock bumper. It just requires some cutting to put the winch mount on it.

8,000 should be plenty. Why spend the extra money for a 10k when all you would need is 8K, you would probably rip your jeep in half before you would actually pull 10K.

I just put one of these on last weekend.. 2-3 hours and no cutting. I like that I could put it back to stock easily if I wanted to. Looks pretty good too!

Whilst an 8000lb will do fine, a 10,000 will usually pull you out faster (all things being equal) as its not working as hard.

Also depends on how often you plan to use it (as in just in case one day, or several hours at a time every trip) and how many of your mates not in Jeeps you have to pull out

Thanks for the pictures and the link. I'm still torn between stealth (hidden in bumper) and your type of installation. I do like the look of that trophy sitting there. After all, if you are going to spend a good chunk of change for something so useful why would you want to hide it? That, by the way, was a rhetorical question...I know most of the standard answers.

Thanks to the participants of threads like this for the inspiration. This is on my definite to-do-list.

if you do everything right the first time then that's probably right...I did some stuff kind of a$$ backwards so I had to re-do it....but it wasn't bad...here's the link to my write up

Quick update since yesterday. I got a 12K lb badland winch from harbor freight, the Tim Allen model for cheap...had to start somewhere. I figure a strong winch with relative low load ought to last long, even if it is a cheap model. I ordered the Rugged Ridge bumper mount with D rings. This system will at least "get me in the door" with respect to having the equipment vs. not having it. Then, as time goes on, I can refine it. Maybe get an aftermarket bumper and better winch. Thanks for all of the help and "getting me over the hump" on getting started. I'll post as I get this up and running.

I meant to say I got the rough country mount with D rings.

This one doesn't keep the factory tow hooks but substitutes the rings. It also uses the through bumper mounting position of the hooks for additional support of the winch plate once the hooks are removed. All of the assembly shows no cutting of any metal parts. If you don't have tow hooks, you have to cut the plastic cover of the bumper to allow for the tow hook mounting position supports through the bumper cover so that the winch plate can bolt to it.

Thanks JK'n but I was wondering specifically about the model that Mountain Goat used. It appears that it works WITH the stock tow hooks.

If I can get that I think I will go that route. If not, I think the RC with the D rings.

You have to cut a notch outta the metal inner bumper (was easy to use a hack saw) then you have to cut a slot on top of the plastic outer bumper. I used a dremmel tool and did small cuts over and over till it fit....the winch plate has a lip over it so you can't even see where you have to cut. and you do keep the factory tow hooks.

Hehe, Mountain Goat ya, I'm pretty sure you were referring to 2010WranglerMountain. Just to let you know, I started out thinking his looked pretty cool. I followed his link and did some reading. Saw the fabrication that he had to do. On the same link that 2010WranglerMountain gave me (thanks again) they had the RC winch plate. I downloaded the manual. I discovered that for almost twice the price, I could save myself from having to cut up the bumper and or plastic cover. The other thing was that the mounting being spread out like the RC was I figured it was pretty secure (torsion over a greater distance = less force on the mounting hardware during a heavy pull load). I liked the idea of D rings over the hooks. I have always been concerned about the squareness of the hooks and their effect on tow straps. The D rings are much more secure and not a chance of the tow strap accidentally coming off. So I went with that. Thought I would post my selection for others trying to make the choice. I also did some shopping to make sure that the company that 2010WranglerMountain linked to had a price in the ball park. I couldn't find any cheaper. The one place that I thought I found cheaper, when I read the fine print, there was a check box to check to include the D rings in the purchase and when checked, it brought the price up to the same. There was no shipping costs but there was a small handling fee. Still the price with the handling fee was cheaper than the other sites that I checked.

It looks like I'm going to be adding about 110 to 120 lbs to the front bumper. The shipping weight on the winch was just under 100 lbs (97) and I'm guessing that the winch plate will weigh in at about 15 to 20 lbs. That's like having a small wench sitting on the bumper. I hope she's worth the price of admission.

So if I'm not mistaken, since I dont want to cut the plastic factory bumper, I should get the RC winch plate? I would be able to mount, say a smittybilt XRC8 8,000 lbs winch on said plate?
