Winch Recommendations other than Warn. My Warn M8000 broke on First Use

Hi All,

Anyone have any recommendations for a winch other than Warn. I went to use my Warn M8000 for the first time at Rausch Creek in PA on 8/24/2014 and it sounded like a chainsaw.

I traded emails with Warn and they won't cover it because it was thrown in on the deal for my new 2014 Unlimited Rubicon X. Since the dealership is the first owner and I don't have the original receipt since I didn't purchase it. Warn says it can fix it myself or pay someplace in PA to fix it for me.

I need a winch that will fit a Rugged Ridge XHD Modular bumper and won't break on the first use like my Warn. Also a company that stands behind their product.

Thanks,

DIDS

Well, you should have the dealer pull up the invoice for it and let them take care of it.

Warn M8000 is a made in china winch you would have to go to ZEON line to get made in USA winch from warn. sorry to hear the CS sucks.

Take it to the dealer! It would be ridiculous if they don't take care of it!

8k is a small winch for a JKU. Should be a minimum of 1.5 * GVWR (5400lbs for a JKUR) = 8100, so you are just under the *minimum* required.

I have an Engo 10kS on my 13 JKU. Has worked great so far.

This has some good info, including winch capacity calculations. Winch Tech - The Guide to choosing a Winch

This is a little old, but a great review: Massive Multi-Winch Shootout - Four Wheeler Magazine

I don’t have experience with them, but Quadratec winches are interesting. They have 1 year electrical warranty (industry standard) and lifetime mechanical warranty (beyond industry standard). They also handle all warranty issues in house, and, since they customer service is pretty awesome, that’s good for when things go bad.

They have a 9500lb winch with integrated solenoid for $360, I’m considering it right now. There isn’t a ton of reviews at the moment (good or bad), that’s what is holding me back

If the dealership doesn't make this right for you one way or another, I would make a huge issue of it.

I have a Smittybilt xrc8 winch on my Jeep and have been very pleased with it. First trip out it saved my ass more than once, and also helped a fellow Jeeper who swamped his rig. It has been very reliable and has worked every time I need it. It's even been under water a few times. No issues. Here's some pics of when it helped me.

I have the same winch and it is great. I have used it many times, even gone under the water and no problems. Sure beats the high price of a Warn.

From your description of what the winch did when you tried to use it, it sounds like it was wired incorrectly. This should be covered by your dealership.

Same thing I heard. I know my M8000 from a few years ago was "USA made" (I know the motor is from Germany).

In any case, can't really blame WARN for the service aspect of this case - your beef is with the dealership. My company is facing the same situation - customer wants a 2 year warranty on a system we're building. If one of the components (such as a vacuum pump) fails, they'll have absolutely no luck calling the manufacturer for warranty work - they'll have to come through us.

Sounds like maybe the gear drive on the drum wasn't fully engaged.

Anyone familiar with Mile Marker winches? They offer a hydraulic winch that looks awesome. It doesn't need heavy current to drive it. It does require the engine to be running. It connects to the power steering pump. If someone knows anything about these, please speak up. Apparently the military is a fan of the hydraulic winch.

The M8000 is made in Oregon. Dont give up on Warn, they are the best.

Hopefully the dealer will take care of you. M8000 is not made in China. I talked to Warn before I bought mine. They willingly disclosed that some models are, but the M8000 isn't one.

M8000 is the one i bought because it was made in usa . It better be for an extra $300 it cost compared to the vr8000. To the op have you tried the winch again ? And i thought the same about not being engaged .

I have a quadratec 95001 synthetic winch and I love it. I've used it several times this year and it is the best winch for the money. Highly recommended. Quick, strong, and above all safe.

I tried it twice and had the same issue. I am a new Jeeper so I had my more experienced fellow club members help me unspool the line and re-spool it. We made sure the winch was fully engaged ( the lever was all the way in the engage position).

I will be talking with the delaer today. Hopefully something can be done.

Mabey the dealer screwed it up. Hope everthing works out. Dont back down in them . I worked at a car dealer for seven years . And one thing that ive learned is if you complain enough and get loud you can get almost anything you want

Hopefully the dealership makes it right. I have the M8000s on my JKUR and it has pulled me out without issues. Like others have said, don't give up on Warn.

I just got off the phone with the dealer and I have to drop it off next Monday night and they will look at it on Tuesday. Hopefully they fix it.
