Wind Noise from front Winshield

The noise from the wind is a bit annoying....I checked my freedom tops to see if they were loose but everything looked good. I guess the windshield being at a 90 degree angle doesn't help things. Anybody else?

If it whistles, then your driver door isn't attached far enough into the upper seals !

It is easy to adjust by the upper hinge-

You have identified the problem. I was actually able to make mine worse with the installation of a bug deflector. The wind sheer was redirected to mid-windshield and was nearly deafening at 65 mph. I took it off after 23 miles.

The windshield angle and the profile of the front of the vehicle will not make for a Lexus-like experience.

If you have a soft top, you may be right, but

I can't hear any wind noise at 70mph with my hardtop and it's very quiet inside, heh heh unless the "T" tops are off !

Jimbo, ours whistles in all configurations. I too have to believe it involves the seal around the glass on the windshield at this point. It can't be the top or doors if it does it when they aren't on....

I have a hardtop but it is not whistling or leaks. It is wind sheer or buffeting. There is a lot of noise compared to most vehicles.

There was a post on here recently where someone found that there is a channel around the windshield that causes the whistling. I believe they taped it first to identify the location and then filled it with silicone to permanently stop the whistling.

My remedy fixed mine, but I've read a thread about a guy who had wind noise right at the windshield seal (upper corner), don't know how he found that !

Like I said, mines very quiet--you will have to insulateit if you want peace and quiet--

There are several "insulation kits" Quadratec hasem--mine is Offroadheroes and I've even modified that one

The hardtop is like a sound chamber-insulating for water, doesn't really help sound transmission !

My hardtop install on my '07 windshield whistled. I should say dealer install as I just sat in the waiting room while they did the work. I had them do it as I was crippled up at the time and didn't want to attempt the stalk change and the electrical wiring with only one functioning arm.

The fix was simple and cheap. I removed the two panels at the front and ran a strip of 1/4" x 3/8" weather stripping across the rubber seal on top of the windshield and replaced the panels. No more whistle.

Great question from the Mrs - is the whistling from a replacement (non OEM) windshield? We have changed the OEM and our whistling has started.

My hardtop is a Bestop and is well insulated. The sound is the way of air directed from the shape of the hood. The air blast (buffeting) hits need the top of the windshield. People that ride motorcycles on the road have a good understanding of this. Like I previously said, the bugshield I installed redirected the air blast directly into the middle of the windshield. You could almost see the air. It was incredibly loud. I removed it and went back to ok. A Jeep is not a Lincoln or a Lexus. It has more noise and always will because of aerodynamics.

The wind buffeting noise at about 50 mph with the hard top on is ridiculous....I have never had another vehicle do this with the windows up.....very annoying

I had a windshield claim.. Have owned my 2011 Jeep for almost a year now. Never whistled before.
I called the class place that replaced it (OEM.. Mopar). They said it's common and what they have done to other jeeps is put a moulding around the glass. I was thinking this may not be a bad thing since BOTH cracks I got stemmed from hits to the edge of the glass.
Thoughts?

Whistle

Mine did not whistle at all until I had to have the windshield replaced..now it whistles at times but it's not real bad so I can live with it.

Jimbo: I was just looking to the insulating kits on Quadratec, they are 1" pieces of some kind of foam that stick to the roof of the freedom panels. Is that basically what yours is? And those kits actually reduce sound by a noticeable level ?

Mine is ˝" if Acoustic-Thermal insulation and the quilted nylon covering and my JKUR is "whisper" quiet at 70 mph, so if those are 1" thick--they gotta be good-

I've taken it one step further though, I've done the sides with the T-A insul, but, having 1" on top will cut the sun heat xfer WAY DOWN and reduce the sound a LOT !!

Good luck

No windshield whistling but my driver side mirror tends to whistle. I think the improvements made to overall noise reduction amplify the wind noise resulting from the overall design...if that makes any sense...my JK is virtually silent compared to my '67 CJ5!

Just had my 2012 Wrangler Sport in with hard top. Same noise that increases with speed and stops when you slow down. Dealer found the seal around the windshield to not be placed correctly and replaced it issue resolved.

IDK if it is the same with hardtops but my soft had incredible wind noise to the point that you couldn't hold a conversation with a passenger. Found out that Chrysler puts a plastic windshield header in the top and over time it bows out causing the top to not seal properly to the windshield frame. I picked up a steel one, from Chrysler of all people, and it has fixed the insane noise pollution. Hard Tops should be quieter than soft though regardless. I don't think a soft can ever be quiet.

I got mine back from the glass shop again. They removed my new windshield again.. this time they used a spray foam sealer, with a regular sealant (so essentially a double seal). Back to no whistling

I have no whistling or wind noise with my hard top.

And from my recent road trip, my Garmin tells me I topped out at 82.6mph somewhere along the way.

Didn't realize it. Pardon, going to to recharge my pace maker now.....

We test drove a 2012 JKU this weekend, the hard top whistled like crazy.....come on man! It's 2012!! We wanted a soft top anyway. I will take regular old wind noise over whistling any day LOL. The Pentastar vs our 2010 3.8 was barely noticeable around town, which is where do most of our driving but it was refreshing on the highway when we went to pass.

Same here no whistling noise but I do have some general wind noise from the windshield but it doesn't bother me.

i came from a 2005 ford explorer and the wind noise was worse in that vehicle than in the Jeep, makes the Jeep sound quiet.

I to had this issue however at the dealer they found it was the seal around the window which they replaced. My sound was really in the drivers side left corner. No issues now hope that helps

Add us to the whistle club

My girlfriend bought a new 2012 2 door Wrangler with the 3 piece hardtop. We were both surprised at how quiet it was for a "Wrangler". Well after putting 400 miles on it she had a stone fly up and crack the windshield. We had the windshield replaced with a Jeep replacement from the dealer. Instantly after picking it up we heard the dreaded whistle. Well after going back to the glass installer two times and having the windshield removed and replaced two more times...guess what? It still whistles!!!! The only variable that I can find is the depth of the windshield in the window frame. The original windshield sat about a 1/16 of an inch below the edge of the window frame and after having it replaced it now sets just above the edge of the window frame. Jeep should issue a TSB to indicate how critical it is to have the windshield set at the correct depth to avoid unwanted wind noise aka "The Whistle"

I had a whistling noise and from this forum a little while ago tried taping the gap between the glass and the metal windscreen frame across the top of the windscreen. It stopped...

So I got some left over fly screen rubber (bout 5 or 6mm rubber tube used to hold flyscreen into the flyscreen frames from local hardware store) and pushed it into the gap. No more whistle.
