That stinks. I do have glass coverage (mandatory $0 deductible in FL) safelite carries Mopar glass because it's so highly requested. I was surprised when I took it in a couple months ago. Also the quickest windshield change out I've ever seen. 35 minutes!
Some jackass cut me off going a good 20 over the speed limit and shot a rock back. Put a huge crack in my windshield the other day. I feel your pain...
The aftermarket glass may or may not fit perfectly. It may cause wind noise. I put aftermarket in mine, and get a little whistle sometimes depending on which way the wind is blowing. Not enough to bother me, but enough I can hear it.
My experience is that the aftermarket windshields don't hold up as well as OEM. But on the other hand, you can replace them a couple of times for the same price, so I guess you get what you pay for.
This. Unfortunately I have had the awesome luck of having to replace my windshield on an average of twice a year. I thought for sure with my lift and 37s that I would be protected by height. Yeah I was so wrong.
Even going cheap at about $170 installed I don't see any problems with the glass........unless this is why I am having to replace them so often. Lol
Mine spontaneously cracked when I was up in the mountains the other day. I got quoted $435 to replace with 'discount' from my insurance (I don't have coverage since crack is over 6"). Still debating but I kinda want the OEM just for the decal. Oh the vanity!
Mine cracked from the cold temps and snow and then hot defrost a couple weeks ago. Luckily my insurance has $0 deductible for glass, but I went with OEM. Took a couple days to get it, but I wanted the grille and the little Jeep to the side of the glass.
If you want the OEM stickers there are companies that sell the sticker sets. Just buy the aftermarket windshield and a sticker set and you are all set.
Unless you really want those decals - go with aftermarket and save yourself some cash.
No real difference at all, quality of aftermarket glass from reputable shop is the same or better than OEM.
In fact, my non-OEM from Safelite held up much better than OEM.
OEM was all pitted after less than a year, non-OEM still looks brand new after 1.5 years.
Has anyone thought of going to a Polycarboate windshield? I still have my original windshield going on 4years old now but finally got a second chip in it. Found this company Optic Armor out of Linn Mo. kinda spendy but I think I'll give them a call and get some more specific info. Jeep JK 07 to present $450.
Unfortunately these aren't legal in most states for on road use. They are good for off road, though.
To make your glass windshield tougher, our DIY kits install a film over the windshield to absorb the impact of rock hits and prevent it from breaking the window.
We had the windshield replaced a few years ago. After shopping around, we found a place that would install glass without the decals for $200. Safelite wanted nearly twice that much for glass with decals. We went with the $200 option and purchased a decal kit off Amazon for under $15.
The aftermarket glass has held up longer than the factory glass did.
Glass coverage varies from state to state and company to company. Most policies have glass covered under comprehensive with a zero deductible for repair and whatever your comp deducible is for replacement. I had mine replaced a couple of months ago with OEM glass for my $100 deductible. When I chose my policy, I selected a $100 deductible for comp...but could have gotten $0, $250, or even $500. If you don't know what is covered or how much it will cost, you need to contact your agent or replace them.
I went with PGW glass when I replaced mine. It did well in the TJ, and has now proven itself again in the JKU.
I was really upset at fist when a small rock caused a dime sized star crack in the windshield. It happened on the highway, so I didn't see it before it hit, and it wasn't even that big of a rock. I had it sealed and went on. That was two years ago. I took a hit by a larger rock this past week, and it was loud too. Just a nick in the surface glass this time. I had quite a few nicks in the glass, and it's getting that sandblasted look on it too, but it's held up for years now. I'll be going back to PGW glass.
Wow, i just saw all of the responses. Safelite wanted $549 for oem glass and $429 for non oem. I went to glass.net. i think that was the site. I filled in some info, less than 45 seconds later i got a call from a local glass company.... $183 installed, in my driveway, including all fees and tax. Lifetime warranty on installation. Lifetime warranty on rock chips smaller that a quarter. I do get a hair bit of whistle, but not enough to matter. Oh....ordered stickers.
Well add me to the list of people that have the whistling after a windshield replacement. Had safelite replace the windshield on my jk. OEM mopar glass. Now driving over 30mph gives me the whistle and it gets louder the faster I go. Super annoying. Called them today and they said they know all about it. Common problem with wranglers and if its not sunk in just right it does this. They will come on out to replace again.
Been through this twice. There are special plastic spacers, that Safelite should have, that keep the windshield centered correctly during install. If it's not done correctly, the windshield won't sit correctly and will whistle. There is no "hard frame" the the windshield sits in. It's more of a "floating" windshield, so if you don't use the spacers they are very difficult to place correctly.
If you have a whistle, like I did, it's because there is a gap at some point on your window's edge. All I did was go and get some stay soft roofing caulk and caulked along the top edge of my windshield (where I noticed a larger than average gap). Instantly fixed the whistle. It was a simple fix.
Follow-up. Second attempt fixed it. Got a different guy this time, same company. He knew all about the wrangler whistle and said he fixes them all the time. Looked it over and saw the problem right away. The top center was a bit above the frame sticking up. You could feel it when you rubbed your hand over it. He said the entire windshield has to be below the frame or this happens. He took it off and reset it. I can see now that it sits a bit lower.
I did bring up the spacers but he kinda blew them off saying that as long as its centered and sitting below the window frame its fine.
Also one thing I noticed with the new windshield. I always get the mopar oem glass because it cost me nothing. This one I got is a bit diff than others Ive had. It has the jeep in the corner and the grill but the mopar writing in the lower drivers side is not in a square like they have been in the past. It more rectangle now so I can see it coming out behind the tweeter on my dash. So maybe Chrysler has changed them in 2017? Also the grill logo is a bit more jagged. Ill take a pic sometime if I can. For a min I thought it was some after market knock off but it has the mopar writing on it.
