Would you sell a freedom top to get more stuff?

I have a freedom top that I bought when I got my 08, and I quite frankly would rather just deal with the soft top even over the winter.

If you had a hot nut to speed up getting other mods such as an NX top or rails would you sell it? My wife thinks/knows I am nuts for wanting to get rid of the top, but even on my old jeep I never had any need for a hard top. If I wanted a roof, I would have a Yukon.

Is there a market for these tops, even used?

i bought one for my TJ because i didn't like the soft top. never used the one on my 2007 Sahara, didn't get one with my 2012 Rubicon. I prefer the hard top.

You'll sell locally in no time. (You'll never be able to ship it.)

Unless it's damage, look on Q-tec to see what new hard tops are going for a shoot for a few hundred bucks less. Should be no problem.

Many of us, obviously, only have soft tops and are perfectly happy that way.

I sold the hard top off my '03 TJ to buy a lift kit. I ran the soft top even though Illinois winters.

Completely worth it.

I had a 98 for several years and never needed the shell. I see them on qtec new for over 2k. Is that how much these things are new? Wow. But now hopefully I will be able to sell it outright and get some toys. It is in great shape, too.

I'm one of those who consider the Freedom Top itself as being "more stuff". But my wants/needs ain't the same as yours.

If somehow I had not got the 3 piece at first, by now with fall/winter/monsoon approaching, I would be looking for a good deal on one like yours.

That's what I am thinking/hoping. Now that the weather is turning, it might be a good time for me to rid myself of it.

IMO if i could only have one top on my '11 JKU it would probably be just the hardtop. I had my JKU for the first summer this year and only had the top all the way folded down 1 time, and never will again. With the top in sunrider position and the 3 rear windows removed it may as well be all the way down, the small area over the cargo zone is the only spot an area of top over which is of no difference to any passenger. but if i only could have one it would be the HT for looks, security and winter convenience and being able to go through car washes

I ordered the hardtop with my '08 and kept it about 2 months when I decided that I prefered the soft top and sold it. Bought the RR XHD bumpers with the money and have no regrets. I don't think the soft top is any colder in the winter than any other vehicle, besides the heater is so hot you could cook with it plus it heats up quick. Love the soft top and ordered my '12 with the soft top only. The bumpers transferred over to the '12 so I'm happy that is sold the freedom top.

What did you get for it? I know not to expect as much as yours is newer, just trying to gauge it.

Everything must go! Nah, just prioritizing my build out. Hard top is not in the cards, I am originally from Wisconsin, I like it cold. I don't need any hard top, not even in the cold winters of PA.

I had a number of rag top sport cars thru the PNW monsoon seasons, commuting to school for 4 years and 28 miles each direction.

Pretty much took the cure for 'daily driver'.

You should be able to easily sell it on craigslist.

I was considering the same thing ever since I got my Trektop NX but I'm still on the fence. The hard top is a pain to store if you don't have a garage and it would easily sell for $1500+ on CL.

On the other hand, my jeep only leaks with the soft top, its more durable for the winter (heavy snow) and I have easier access to the rear storage.

Make your own pro/con list and choose what's best for you. Either way, its a win/win.

On the other

Exactly. I don't have anyplace to really store it other than on an A frame covered in a tarp on my patio... the same patio I use to drink beer and light my outdoor firepit. I don't want this thing on my work!! My soft top does not leak at all (so far...) and I would rather just sell it. Time to take some pics and sell to a local!

In the full interest of disclosure, I should also add that with the '12 Rubi I only ordered the hard top. No soft top this time around. At least not to begin with.

The primary reason for only getting the hard top is security. Now that I've moved from Illinois to SoCal, the jeep spends a lot of time in parking garages. Some of which aren't the best places to leave a convertible.

Even in Illinois I wish I had a hard top at times. When I ran soft top only I tried to keep nothing of value in the Jeep. I also kept the doors unlocked to try to avoid getting the windows slashed. Over the course of five years with the TJ, I had everything from pens to sunglasses stolen. I even had a radar detector stolen from under my seat one of the very few times I left it in the vehicle.

The soft top was a pain in the winter, but doable (just don't touch the windows when they are covered in ice as they can crack). I could manage with the wind noise on the freeway, and I tolerated the rain always finding a way through the soft top's seams. The security issue was an anoyance, but I eventually bought a BestTop Trunk Box and that alleviated some of the headache.

With all that said, at the time I was on a collge budget so I had a choice between keeping the hard top or getting a lift kit. The lift kit was more important to me.

I have since graduated and no longer have to make the choice between the two, so I can have both.

If I had to choose again, the soft top and lift kit combo would win every time.

If I was in a more urban area, I'd be right there with you. My "city" has no traffic lights and we are lucky to even have lights on in our community. It's all farm land out here. For me, I go into the office 2 days a week and work from the house / boxers the rest of the time, lol. I don't worry about anything getting into my jeep other than my kids and maybe a bee.

Your description makes me miss the farm towns back home. As a kid I used to spend the summers at my grandparents' house. They lived in a small town with a single stop light. Ah, the simple life.

For you, it sounds like selling the hard top is the way to go.

When I sold mine, I did it on ebay. I don't remember the exact number I got for it, but I remember it was much more than what I thought I would get. The guy drove like two hours to pick it up from me. It worked out great.

Don,

I took my freedom top back to a different dealer than where I bought it and traded it in to them towards the purchase of new wheels/tires. They gave me $1850 for it. I think they go for about $2200 new.

Soft top is WAY better. Driving around many of nights during the summer and hell even during the winter in the dead of night topless is we'll.....priceless.

I might look at that route. Seeing as how it is from an 08, I might not have as much leeway. I'll make some calls and post it here for sale to see if anyone wants it. Who knows.

Good luck. You shouldn't have to much trouble selling it. I only had mine for 2 months but I regretted it the whole time. I would see Jeeps driving around topless and just cringe.
