I just placed an order for the new Mopar Bead lock wheels which are on backorder so I have sometime to decide on the tires to go on them. I will be picking up my new JKU Hard Rock tomorrow with a 3" Stage 3 lift. I am going with 35" and will be doing moderate off road'n and would like to get some input on these two tires. I live in the south so snow & ice are not an issue.
Thanks
Based on Rig and Build sounds like we have a different definition of "Moderate Off-Roading" IF you had Winter issues I'd say the Duratracs hands-down but IF you have any Rocks on your "moderate" trails.... The MT/R's.
Some have issues with the Duratracs sidewalls.
I hear south and I think mud, and real mud means large voids. And while a Duratrac is far better than most AT's at throwing mud, it doesn't compare to a real mud tire. Just look at the voids and you will see what I mean.
I have Duratracs on my truck and KM's on my Jeep, the difference is significant. But, I swap out the KM's in the winter for AT KO's. The Duratracs get run year round.
Problem with Mud is, whats in it. The tire gets spinning and contacts a sharp rock at speed and Boom - Done.
Is anything "puncture-Proof"? No.
All you can do is hedge the bet. Re-inforced side-wall is good insurance.
I have a slight problem in that I tend to go all out in anything I do. I will be looking to get into any mud hole I can find and then there is an large off road park about 2 hrs away in the Ozark's that will have rock trails from beginner up. I think the MT/R's are what I want/need but have seen a lot of people talk about Duratrac's, maybe since they are well rated for snow.
Duratracs are a really good All around tire. Great road manners, great in snow and rain and a very decent off-roading tire. Not a great mud tire but Mud tires aren't good at a lot of the stuff the Duratracs are.
Some folks have said the sidewalls aren't super strong.
I never had one fail and know several Rangers around here that swear all their other tires had punctures Weekly and have yet to have one on a Duratracs.
Go figure.

I am still leaning toward the MT/R's since I will be in a lot more mud than snow and one gave them almost as good a rating for on road as the Duratracs, but welcome more input
Duratracs are soft and prone to losing chunks when you are spinning them on rocky terrain. While they are a great all purpose tire, if I was building a rig and needed some wheel spin (mud) to get where I wanted to go, didn't need snow and ice capability, I would get the MTRs
I work for Goodyear, and can tell you for a fact, based on the compound of the rubber that makes each tire that the Duratrac is a softer tire and is not nearly as puncture resistant as an MTR. I currently run the MTR on my Jeep, in a 35 and could not be happier. They have incredible road manners for a mud tire and do not hum. I love them
If you wheel aggressively, MRTks
If it's a daily driver with light trails, Duratracs
