xpel wrap torture testing

Hey everyone!

You saw my xpel wrap write up for the installation, and there were some people posting about the cost of the full jeep wrap vs a paint job. I will agree the full wrap is a little overboard, but some areas of a jeep need to be protected like the rear fenders, they take a serious beating if you dont have running boards or rocker armor.

The xpel ultimate wrap is supposed to "self heal" and I've tested it in my kitchen, but how much abuse can it take? When I bought my rubi i vowed to use it to its full potential.

Here's the first test. Salt.

To break in the engine, i took it on a road trip to Vermont. Killington Mountain. Drove through snow and ice on the way up. Enough snow to have the salt trucks 3 wide on the highway.

By the time I got home the truck was completely crusted over.

I left the salt on the truck for a few days, and wanted to avoid rubbing the salt into the wrap, so I took the truck to one of those touchless car washes that uses the high velocity water that is open all night.

The wrap looked great after the wash, which was more like a glorified 12 dollar rinse. There was still a dirty film all over the truck. But I dried it a little and could see the wrap looked good underneith.

I could see that I was rubbing swirl marks into the wrap when I dried certain areas to see the wrap under the dirt film. Its cold here in NJ but not that cold and my truck is in the garage(no heat). Now its supposed to heal. Ill let you guys know when i go look at it tomorrow.

Here are some pics of the truck after the wash, I know they are not very good as I had to take them in the garage at night.

Now that I see those pics of the clean truck posted, I realize how bad they really are. I will try to get some better ones during the day.

The reason for the wrap was that I wanted to be able to get my black truck washed and not have it be swirled like crazy. After I spent the money to install the wrap I thought that I should have just washed the truck in the auto washer like I did tonight, and that it wouldnt get swirled.

That plan would never have worked, and Im looking forward to taking the truck to a real carwash and letting the guys wash and rub it without freaking out that they are rubbing swirls all over my truck.

I just walked out and looked at the truck, The wrap has some marks where the salt crust was, I have to really get it washed to tell for sure, It does look very good considering that it wasnt really washed last night.

That rinse carwash was not enough firepower for the grime crusted all over the truck. Ill get it really washed and post some pics

It looks good, but the carwash I used was not the best. To be fair, I need to really get it washed

On the better note, I did see some swirls last night where I was drying the fenders trying to rub the dirt film off, and I didnt see them today.

Im going to get it really washed and then let you guys judge.

Car wash

Ok washed it today, No sign of damage from the salt wich was the thickest salt crust I've ever seen.

The point of the wrap for me was to be able to wash the truck and not worry about swirls in the black paint. It may be less neccessary on lighter colors, but on black, unless you dont mind the swirls, I feel it becomes neccessary.

Even if you dont have black but you do have painted fender flares, you definatly need something protecting the rear flares, I dont have running boards and my rear flares have taken a serious beating. At 700 miles, I can see rock marks in the wrap.

Today I got the first car wash and oil change becasue im following the break in rules and looking at the car after the wash, xpel stood tall with not a swirl mark anywhere. I was watching them scrub my wheels and then rub the paint with the same wool mitten and without the wrap, that would have made me cringe.

The waxing is what makes the install so important, If your considering doing this to your truck or at least to the rear fenders make sure all the edges are wrapped. Its difficult because the wrap itself is thick. so it dosent bend very easily. I have sections that were not wrapped around edges and you can see where the wax got stuck there. This is where you get what you pay for, and if it will cost a little more to have the edges fully wrapped, do it. Then inspect the hell out of it and make sure it was done.

Im going to bring the truck back to Executive Paint Protection to install the "rubicon" decal and im sure he will have a solution for the wax in the edges of the wrap in certain places.

The wax in some edges is not a big deal and may wear off in a few days, but for the purposes of this thread, if you do this to your truck, be careful about waxing.

here are some pics where im trying to show you the wax issue. The first one is just another hood shot showing with the sun in the background that there are no swirls in the wrap. the second one is wax under the wrap at a weak spot by the hinge, and the last is the grill with some wax in the spot where the wrap meets the paint.
