Your opinion on resale value

I've been seriously considering a new Wrangler but am kind of turned off by the 202 HP V-6. What makes it even worse is knowing that the Pentastar will be here in a year or so.

I really don't want to wait another year + so I thought I'd buy now and then trade in when the Pentastar becomes available.

The Wrangler has always had good resale value but my fear is with the new, more powerful engine, resale values will nosedive since most people will want the increased HP plus whatever other improvements are made.

What do you think?

The 3.8 will have very small to no affect on resale value.
Look at the new 5.0 Mustangs. Are you seeing the price on the used 4.6 cars nosedive? No. The way the used car market sees it, it's still a Jeep. There may be a slight decline at first, but people will still always be looking at saving a few bucks on a used Jeep. Look at the 4.0 Jeeps. Most people, dealers included will only ever see the 3.8 as having more power with better fuel economy. Has this made the prices on the 4.0 Jeeps drop? No. Dealers know they're going to move a Jeep on their lot, regardless.

No one mentioned the fact that this new Pentastar could turn out to be a piece of crap and make a 2010 a real gem.

The dealer always wins in the trade. The question was regarding resale value. They will retain their resale value because the 3.8 is a proven workhorse that is known to last 2-300k miles just as the 4.0 is. The 3.6 may be the latest and greatest, but it will be many years before we know if it will hold up as well.

Agreed. He actually mentioned both. He said he wants to trade in and what we think resale values will be. Resale values have nothing to do with trade in. Dealers go by wholesale pricing. I forget the book they use, but it is not KBB.

You trade it in, the dealer marks it up to retail and sells it. If they can't make a profit, they won't take it in. It is just the nature of the beast. Sell it yourself and get more or trade it in and take a hit. The choice is yours.

2007s and 2008s unlimited models retail in the low 20K price range right now unless it is totally stripped down version then maybe in the high 18K range. For a three year old jeep, I would say that it holds its value pretty well.

I'm in a similar situation. I want to get rid of my 09 x and look to trade it in for a 10. I'm know I'm going to lose money but I want to minimize how much. They have a 08 on the lot (used) wtih more miles than mine and are asking 22k. I want to go in tomorrow and try to get something worked out. I would rather get a 10 and not a 11 (right now). I'm trying to figure out what I should expect them to offer me for mine, and what I should not go below. Other than KBB anyone have a good website. In case you need to know x with 26K miles and no A/C. Thats why I am trading. It's my first Jeep and I thought A/ C was standard on all vehicles and did not even check Yeah it's my fault.

Whatever website you use, the dealer will tell you they use the other one. If you get an average of several websites, they'll tell you they go by auction prices. They're all in business to make money. As much as possible. Some have a little more interest in helping out their customers than others. I had a good dealer (Newark Jeep in Newark, Delaware).

They'll try to hose you because it doesn't have A/C I'd bet........

QFT. Edmunds can also tell you what Jeeps are going for in your area. That's the best info you can have going in.

go for a 99 to 04 wrangler for around $10K. Summer is almost over so there are deals to be had. Have fun with it for a couple years, sell it in late spring, it will only lose a couple grand in value. can't go wrong with red.

Check nada.com. Many dealers and banks go by that.

Three choices:

1 get the JK and keep it
2 wait for the 2011
3 buy the JK and trade it In next year and plan on taking a beating.
