04 4cyl Tj, plus 6 grand for 03 rubicon?

I have an 04 4cyl Tj, I owe the bank 11 grand and 4 more years, today I priced an 03 Rubicon, and I'm approved for the loan already, my jeep as trade in, no down payment, will have me at a five year loan instead of 4 years that I'm already commited to, but I'll be driving a rubicon instead of a base model...

Do you guys think it's worth it? My payments will go up $70 dollars a month, my Jeep has 50k miles on it, the Rubicon has 80k miles on it and is a year older.

The difference between what I owe on my Jeep, and the Rubicon, is 6 grand.

The way I see it is that if I tried to upgrade my Jeep to compete with a Rubicon model it would cost me alot more than 6grand...

What would you guys do?

I would sell the Jeep outright on craigslist or post locally on EBAY (it's free) for two or three grand more than they are offering and then pay three to four grand difference instead of six.

Im against trading cars in, the dealer just doesn't pay enough. I agree with p95loser sell on craigslist for a few grand more than the dealer is offering as a trade. From my experience that benefits both you and the purchaser of your jeep, you make more they pay less then go and get what you want from there. check out kbb.com to see what everything is worth as trade in, private party, and retail.

I agree with these guys. TRY to sell it outright but if you can't then take the trade but you will love the i6 the rubi has over your i4.

I agree, with everyone so far, if I sold my jeep for what I owe, that would be awesome, but what would happen if after I sold it the Rubicon was already sold to someone else....

I guess I would ask this question . What can a Rubicon do my 04 can,t ?
You will be paying for five years on a Wrangler with 80.000 miles ??
Why so you can look at it and say that is a Rubicon ??
You would be the reason dealers think we are easy . You own 11,000 on a 04 4Cly ? Really

hey i owe 13 on a 02. just bought it and that is its KBB value. 80k on a well maintained jeep is not bad and if he wants to do serious off roading the rubi will do better plus i dont know if you have ever driven a 4 cyl but they are sluggish and slow.

I wouldnt do it, like said theres not a huge difference between the two....I dont see goin up in miles/payment, and gettin an older car an upgrade.....but thats just me....Id keep the one u got, or look for something a little better.

The rubicon is a better off the shelf package. However If you start to modify it correctly you will be taking off everything you paid extra for. If you want to keep it stock and wheel you will be fine. If it was me I would sell the 4cylinder outright and take and pay off your existing loan. And as a previously stated what can a rubicon do that your 4cylinder can't.

Lets see, 4 to 1 crawl ratio, front and rear lockers, dual dana 44's, cruize control, air conditioning, rear disk brakes, beefier trans, beefier transfer case, inline 6 has way more grunt than the 4cyl but gets same mileage... The angle I'm looking at it from is I couldn't add all that stuf to my jeep for 6 grand, and the difference in price is only 70 bucks a month over what I'm already paying.

Here my take! Take your time and properly sell your jeep thru private sale to get as close to the loan amount as possilbe. In dealer trade, you will get killed. Be patient for a Rubicon, they are out there. Then you can shop for maybe a LJ Rubicon.

The OP will be into this Jeep $17,000 ?? Any one see a problem with this ??

I would be thinking long term not just today ?? And yes I have had two 4 Cly Wranglers . I found them slow but reliable and better gas mileage .

How much real off roading do you do with yours in comparison to on road ?
I have my 4 cyl and its definitely a dog on hills, but I only get to go wheeling maybe once a month.
(Working 6 and 7 days, wife and kids are a priority)
A Rubicon for me would be a waste of $$$$$. But you need to decide if its worth the investment.
You can do upgrades as you go along that you will deem more suitable for the driving you actually do and not have as much invested as you think.
Also, when comparing loans, add up the total of your payments, not what the sale price is. Interest can be a killer.....

It is 70 more a month, for 5 years. That is a chunk of change.
What do you do with the Jeep. If you just cruise around and have fun in it then keep the 4 cyl. If you do a lot of off road stuff and crawling then sell your Jeep outright pay off the loan and then get a Rubi. To answer the question what can a Rubi do that a 4 cyl can't? I would say a lot or there would be no reason to make the Rubis, they would all be 4 cyls. There is a reason Rubis bring top dollar.

Sell it your self.... it's the only way. If the one you're looking at is gone, another will come along. I promise. There are way too many unknowns for us to tell you for sure just how badly the dealer is scamming you on financing. But trust me, it's more than you think. Get your own financing from a local credit union, and go back to the dealer with your preapproved amount. Offer less than you're approved for. I hate to beat on you but it sounds like you might be in a bit over your head on the current '04. If it's as bare bones as it looks then you'll be hard pressed to recoup what you owe.

And I'm still unclear on how 6k works out to 70 per mo.... 70x60 mos. = 4200.00 I think there are #'s hidden in there that you aren't seeing....

More bad news.... NADA, on the Rubi is only $14850. No one will loan you that much for one... So, the dealer is asking over 2k more than the loan value for a maxxed out rubi.....

necromancer_tat- Do what you feel comfortable with but just weigh all you options. It does sound like you are slightly underwater with your current vehicle so try to get the dealer closer to the $14,850 NADA value that inferno girl mentioned. By getting the dealer down on the price some will bring you closer to the same amount that it seems that you are under on the 04 4cyl. I would recommend selling it yourself but if you are underwater then it could be tough to get the $ amount that you might be looking for out of it.

The Rubi has already depreciated just a little bit more than the 4cyl but it will hold it's value longer since it has the i6 and its a Rubi so with that being said that the loss/gain could be better with the Rubi with over the next few years.

The financing #'s seem to be about correct with a $70.00 more a month payment than what you currently have but that extra 1 year will cost you about $4,500 more based on a $370 payment.

As I said before said before to just weigh all your options and go to sleep a happy Jeep owner either way it goes

Thanks for all the replies! I read everyones input, and weighed it out in my mind about wich way I wanted to go. I reasearched the prices of all the other rubicons I could find on sale online, and every other one I could find with less than 80k miles on it was 19 grand or higher.

I went ahead and purchased the rubicon this afternoon, I financed through the same bank I had the loan for my previous jeep, after all is said and done, my loan amount was 16,815.00 total, that included the dealer fees, tax title and tags, so I don't feel like a got a bad deal. And my payments ended up only being $57 dollars more each month, and my insurance went up by $5.

Sure I could've sold my jeep to a private party, but then I would've had nothing to drive until I found just the right deal on a rubicon.

I went to Priority Toyota off of Greenbriar Pkwy. They had taken it in as a trade in. I haven't taken any pics yet, I'll prolly do that tomorrow. It's all stock right now, I added a fishing rod holder to the front bumper today though, I'm trying to figure out how I can mount my winch, but still have the rod holders, lol

Ok, it's been a few months since I made my purchase, and I can tell anyone who is wondering that I'm really happy with my Rubicon. I use it as my daily driver and I wheeled the crap out of it last weekend and it took a beating and performed way better than my 04 4cyl TJ ever would have coped with... but as a side note, I'm currently building a 97 TJ 4cyl rock crawler to use for extreem wheeling and I'm using my Rubicon as a daily driver... my humble oppinion would be that the Rubicon is a lot more capable than other factory options, but if you trully want to get into rock crawling you would end up replacing 90% or the exact same parts that you would if you had a normal Jeep TJ... the factory lockers and Dana 44s are really nice to have, and the 4:1 transfer case are awesome as well, and the 6 cyl is way more enjoyable for daily driving and gets within a couple of mpg of the 4cyl...
