04 - Corner Panel Behind Driver's Tail Light

I was backing away from an obstacle and this tree jumped out at me . . .

I backed into the tree at about 2 mph. Basically, the tree hit the tail light and pushed in the sheet metal on the corner about an inch. The tail light and license plate bracket are not damaged, interestingly.

I'm thinking I can get behind the sheet metal around the tail light and bang it back out. Is going through the wheel well the best approach? I took a quick look and only see one fastener. If the wheel well is the best way in, what is the easiest way to remove it?

Thanks!

The 04's have an evap canister in one of the cavities behind the taillight - can't remember which side.

There's only some wiring in the rear cavities of my 97 - I pull out the rear-most plastic fastener of the plastic inner wheel cover and the end part will fold down like a flap.
I've done it so many times, I've actually busted off the rear-most 'flap' parts permanently.

^X2

There are a couple TJ guys in my club that have had trees jump out at them while backing up on a trail. They simply popped them back to shape from the inside the best they could, re-painted any bare metal, and covered them with corner armor. You can't even tell it happened.

Kind of backwards way of doing it, but I am guilty too. I have not shelled out the cash for corner armor yet. I've been lucky so far.
