04 Rubicon with Salvage Title...

I have an opportunity to buy an 04' Rubicon with 79,000 miles, but it has a salvage title. The owner believes that it was T-boned. The rear axle seems to be leaking. It drove a bit funny. Felt like it needed an alignment. The guy wants $8000.00. Sound like a good deal?

I wouldn't say "good" deal, especially considering you say it doesn't drive well... If you really want it I would try and get closer to the 5 or 6k mark. But then maybe Jeeps go for more over there??!!

I would have the alignment checked before buying it. I've bought salvage title vehicles before and had good luck with them and got them cheap.

I'm not sure how the lockers work in the Rubicons. In 4 lo, i pushed the locker and it said front locked on the dash. i pushed it again and both front and rear blinked, but didn't go steady lighted. It did basically the same in hi range. I have no experience with the rubicons, so if someone could tell me what I shoulod be looking for it would be great.

Thanks.

Speaking from past experience as a bodyman in a former life......walk away from this one. Lateral wrecks do more unseen damage than longitudinal wrecks. When a vehicle has been in a lateral wreck (t-bone), the entire vehicle sees stresses that it was NEVER designed to see. Vehicles are meant to travel forward and back, so that's the way vehicle designers design EVERYTHING. Suspension mounts aren't made to see much lateral impact, same with ALL of your running gear. My advice is to walk away and don't look back.

Sage advice. I believe I was thinking the same thing, but didn't want to admit it to myself....I want a Rubicon. Think I'll start saving.

You can buy a decent, unbent Jeep for not much more, and make your own modifications.Besides the lockers,a Rubicon doesn't really offer much that any Sport ,Sahara,X doesn't have-well,besides the status symbol value! My Dad taught me that when something seems too good to be true,it usually is!A whacked frame is a bad omen,IMHO!

Keep looking. You'll find something. A local guy here in town bought a 2004 Rubi with a salvage title for $5500 and only needed to do some frontend work. The frame was mildly tweaked, but nothing that a decent bodyshop with a laser rack couldn't fix. He got an entire front end of sheet metal at a salvage yard (and as luck would have it, the same color!!), along with a radiator. He's into his Rubi for less than $7k. Not too bad. You'll find something.

My '04 Rubicon has a salvage title and I wouldn't have bought it like that if I didn't know the previous owner (a friend) who had photos of its front driver's side damage and did the rebuild/front axle replacement himself. I wouldn't have bought it if it had the kind of damage on the Rubicon you are describing. I'd pass on that one, especially for $8K.

Well and 44's front and rear, 241 case with a fixed yoke, 4:1 low, 4.10 gears plus the lockers..... Little more than stickers right?

I currently have an 00 TJ 4.0 with D 30/35 and 3.07's running 31's. Need to regear... Lots of work and money. Looking for a Rubicon so i don't have to deal with the upgrades/repairs only the pros can handle. Rubicon (D 44's, 4.10's, lockers...) is where I'm headed, just figured it'd be easier to buy it set up right than to continue to spend money chasing it..... Thanks for all of the replies and advice.

So buy the rubicon gut for the good bits and sell the frame to the junkyard! Combine the two and make a nice jeep.

Problem with that is if you have to start putting money into it to repair things... Then you might as well of spent more and got one with out a Salvage title. Its a toss up, but id lean towards no go on 8... maby 6
