Exclamation 05-06 TJ's 4.0 is a ticking time bomb, CPS, OPDA

Hello all,

If you have an 05-06 TJ it is time to check your CPS (Camshaft Position Sensor), OPDA (Oil Pump Drive Assembly), or whatever else you want to call it. CRYsler apparently has a TSB issued for a limited number of VINS, however, this issue appears to be far more widespread then they currently acknowledge, as in including ALL 05 and 06 TJ's!

It is easy to check, so do it now! If you don't feel comfortable, take it to someone you trust. This issue could cause bad idle, shavings in drained oil, timing related CEL codes, and eventually catastrophic engine failure!

I hate to direct traffic to another forum, but the more organized we keep this issue the better, so please forgive me for posting a link to another Jeep forum thread...

I don't have time to read all 33 pages of that thread.

Does this affect all 04-06 TJs or just ones from a certain plant (is there more than one plant?)?

I have read the first 11 pages & my 06 is not in the dates mentioned but there are some others on there that their engine build date is the same as mine 4-5-06 & they pulled it out just to check & the gears were worn just like those in the TSB.

Around page 19 or 20 a guy said that the gear on the end of what is the distributor is the same as the gear on 99 to 04 models. So if you catch it early enough that it hasn't damaged the gear on the cam you can change the gear on the end of the shaft & be OK.

Interesting... Mine just shredded on me this past week and 3 teeth ripped off. We were able to fish most of it out with a magnet and I hope the rest will be in the oil pan, but mine's an '01?!?! How can I get in on the recall? Anything else I should check??

I had to replace mine. It was making a terrible, screeching sound. $300 down the drain. Thanks Chrysler.

PCM replacement

May or may not be part of this problem but it solved mine. I was having the same problems, stalling, bucking under acceleration, hesitating, and eventually stalling out creating gauge malfunctions all the way. After replacing the cam-shaft sensor and crankshaft sensor then having the stealership re-route some wires with a new harness (their suggestion) I finally got them to replace my PCM (power contorl Module). They hesitated at first but after call after call on my part they did the switch. Cost me $0.00 covered under a powertrain warranty from Jeep (Hooray) on the 04-06 models. JK's are not covered. It's something to look into. Replaced at 39,000 miles. I've got 45,000 now everything has gone away and works as it was meant to.

2005 Wrangler X 65,000 miles. Purchased about 6 months ago with 53,000 on it. I wonder If I am going to run into this or if I'm well past the issue? I always just looked at the 4.0 as wonderful after having 2 different ones go 150k or so without hitch.

A lot pf people have ordered the backordered OPDA, but what you don't realize is that you may not see it for another 2-3 months from what I have read. Now I read on jeepforum that Crown automotive is attempting as we speak to build a new, improved version so the problem will no longer exist. I personally don't think that Chrysler is going to step up to the plate to develop an improved design but I could be wrong. Still it comes down to, if you know the part is on backorder for about 2-3 months, why order it?

Because if you have or are starting to get the problem, what options do you really have?

Get in line now to get your jeep fixed, or replace the engine with something different.

Waiting for a rumor of another company to come out with a fix that works, and availability of that fix...OK if you have another vehicle to drive while the Jeep gathers dust, but to have your primary or only vehicle go out on you...not good.

Exclamation 05-06 TJ's 4.0 is a ticking time bomb, CPS, OPDA

This is a big problem. Chrysler is starting to fill orders now but there were reportedly over 350 back-orders. They more than doubled the price. All '05 & '06s have the potential problem. The early '05s had a recall to replace the gear but the issue now is that the top bushing is not getting enough lubrication. If the shaft seizes up, its all over, but the drag on them can cause gear failure as well. The FOGMod is a mod to allow greasing the top bushing as described here: www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/2005-06-jeep-opda_cps_distributor-failure-1144202/ .Yes its a competing forum but it has the best info on this issue. You don't need to read all 60+ pages, just the 1st.

Rubicon2,

Read the last 2 or 3 pages on the link I posted. Not sure if anyone actually has received one but several have been notified that they are available but need authorization for the increase in price. One guy asked the dealer to send him a photo which showed they actually had one but it also showed they have the same part # and same revision letter.

Not to necro, but if you are checking yours and you cannot re-align, try this: get the gear to line up then pull it out and use a large flat head screwdriver to align the oil pump. Just checked mine and it is wearing. So time to call jeep. Hope this trick helps.
