05 LJ Audio System Upgrade

Hey Everyone,

I made my first foray into Wrangler life this past week with an 05 LJ in great shape. First complaint coming from creature comforts was the less than stellar audio. I know wind and road noise obviously make it not a huge concern but I spend a lot of time sitting in traffic so it's still important to me.

This weekend I replaced the dash and sound bar speakers with the speakers below and stuffed poly fill in the sound bar. The head unit is still stock.

Pioneer TS-G1345R 5-1/4" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com
Pioneer TS-G4645R 4" x 6" 2-way speakers at Crutchfield.com

I have had a lot of success with Pioneer in the past and these also seemed well reviewed. After getting them installed (the 4x6s were kind of a pain) the mids-highs are pretty crisp but things get all distorted with any sort of bass or sub bass. Mine came with the 4 speaker setup so there is no subwoofer right now. I don't need anything rocking my socks off (yet) but I would like at least mostly complete sound that doesn't get all scrambled while attempting to deliver those low frequencies.

So my question is this. Is this a symptom of the factory head not being able to really drive these speakers? Did I not use enough poly in the sound bar? Were these just not great choices when it comes to speakers for an LJ?

I'm pretty open here. I thought I knew a reasonable amount about car audio so this result has been a bit surprising. I am planning on eventually swapping out the head unit but it doesn't fit into the current budget.

Will the 6.5" fit fine without any adaptations whatsoever or would I need to try and make some new holes?

I thought anything past 85dB would be okay but I guess I should try to find some 6.5" in the 90-91 range and then swap the adapter brackets to put the 5.25" in the dash.
