Well, figured I'd take it a step further anyway since it's a 97 and could use the new parts. Glad it worked though, I was awful mad that it was really that difficult to change

I had to do mine as well, but did a full drain, radiator clean with Prestone cleaner, replaced the t-stat, and replaced the water pump, which finally died with the flush.

Probably more work than required, but the 97's water pump was only 32.00 and was the ultimate source of my heating issues.
