keep it tuned up, tire pressures right, air filter clean. not much else to do, you aren't gonna get much better. my xj is 13 city, but if you keep your foot out of it, and keep the rpm's around 1950 to 2050 on the hwy you can do pretty well. i get 20 mpg on the hwy at 62 mph and 1950 rpm.

But one thing that I have noticed is if you keep the speed down to 55-65 on the highway the mpg isnt that bad. But the moment you go over that gas milage plunges.

all stock..

i run both a hard and soft top.. some people say hard tops get better gas mileage but i think the added weight takes away from any aerodynamic difference it would make..

i tried keeping my rpms under 2250 when driving.. what dave said, you have to learn where your jeep likes to run at.. flooring it all the time eats your gas.. take it slow and you will notice a big difference..

i even ran wider 31s.. i had 31x10.5s..

if you dont plan on ever really plan on taking your jeep through deep mud holes or out in very sandy areas.. you could always look into a cold air intake.. im not sure how much of a difference they make but ive heard from many people they give you an extra mpg or 2

ya no offense bud, but it seems if you 'need' at least 3 more (up to 16) you may be in the wrong vehicle. Jeeps are great fun, but you have to realize going into it that gas mileage is not a jeeps strongpoint - they are geared for low end torque and are as previously mentioned, not even close to aerodynamic.

What is this gas mileage you speak off? I average about 170 miles to a tank.

I wish I could get 13, I'm getting 12 now. But I only had it for a week. I filled it up, the needle is a tick above half a tank now, and I have 125 miles on it.

Sorry if this was already posted, i didnt have time to read the entire set of posts but (once again my results are based on a cherokee) i installed an MSD 6al ignition in my cherokee 4.0 the reason is that i had it laying around from my drag car and thought what the hell. anyway It imediately improved the power and fuel economy. my cherokee was 4.0 with 5 speed running 33s with stock gearing so the foot was down all the time due to the lack of original power to it. It increased the power alot and increased my mpg by 6. You can find them on craigslist often for about $125 or buy them new for $185-250 depending on where you go. SUmmit also has their own retagged version they sell new for $175. it is a 6al also. i would advise it if it is indeed available for your engine. not sure your ignition on that. but worse case you can always resell it for more as they are always in demand. Just an idea to think about.

Are those 31 inch tires the stock size tire on your TJ? If not, did you change the speedo gear?

I ask because 20 MPG is pretty much on the far end of the rainbow for TJ's and I can't get anything close to that number.
