15gal to 19gal fuel tank change year?

Got my build sheet today...

What year was the change to a 19 gallons fuel tank made? I swear my 1999 has the 19 gallon tank as it take 15-16 gallons to fill it before the fuel warning light even comes on.

But my build sheet says "NFSS 15 Gallon Fuel Tank". (Hard to believe that maybe a PO upgraded it, but I suppose its possible.)

If you want to accurately measure the size of your tank - do the following math:

LxWxH (length width hight) divided by 231 (number of cubic inches in a gallon - and you will have your answer.

There's also a code on the driver side of the tank (visible) that you can google and get the answer. That's how I found out what mine was years ago before I knew about the build sheet thing.

I might be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that the tanks are the same size. They regulated the size by the filler hose. I think the hose can be shortened to get to 19gals. I could be wrong, but I thought for sure that was the case.

I have a 99, but it only fills up 12 gallons. This doesn't seem normal.

You are correct, the factory tanks are the same physical size. Shortening the vent tube inside the tank allows for greater capacity within the tank. Pretty ingenious on Chrysler's part I might add.. LOL..

I know there are a few write-ups out there but it's really simple. Just drop the tank, remove the fuel pump assembly and inside the tank you will find 2 inlet tubes. One is the fuel fill tube and the other is the vent tube. Reach inside the tank and cut the vent tube (use sharp knife not a saw) within an inch or so of the inside of the tank wall. DO NOT CUT THE FUEL INLET TUBE. This effectively allows more fuel into the tank. The only down side is your existing fuel pump sending unit is calibrated for 15 gallons. You don't have to replace the pump assembly just know that when you completely fill the tank (after this mod) your fuel gauge will read full longer before it begins to drop.

Did this to mine after I got a 19 gal sender off eBay. Super easy to do and adds some range on longer trips.

If I fuel up right when my fuel light goes on I get about 14.5 gal. I can drive 50 more miles and put 3 gallons in and it will still show the empty light. You definitely have a 19 gallon if you can put in 15 when the light comes on.
